Jeff Tyrell shone with bat and ball to power defending league champions Social Club to a nailbiting one-wicket win over hosts Police at Police Field yesterday.

The Social Club seamer took two for 32 and then hit an unbeaten 27 to nudge them to a narrow victory.

Along with fellow seamer Kani Darrell, who led the Social Club attack by claiming four for 40, Tyrell added a vital 12 runs in an unbroken tenth-wicket stand that powered the visitors to victory with 44 balls to spare.

Police found themselves in early trouble at 53 for five after being sent in to bat on a two-paced track and never really recovered as they lost three additional wickets in the space of 16 runs to put Social Club firmly in the driver's seat.

Nyon Steede led the Police resistance with an unbeaten 38 while former national team all-rounder Dennis Archer chipped in with a useful 31.

But having been presented with what seemed a simple task, Social Club were forced to sweat it out for victory after a depleted Police attack made early inroads to have the visitors reeling at 57 for five.

Off spinner Anderson Cumberbatch was the pick of the Police bowling, taking three for 29, while seamers Ozzie Hinds had two for 18 and Shawn Broom two for 35.

Aiding Tyrell in the Social Club batting were player/coach Charlie Marshall (21) and father of a new-born son Detroy Smith, who added a vital 25 before he fell easy prey to a legside trap set by spinner Cumberbatch.

Cleveland County 72-2

Player/coach Clay Smith emerged as the unlikeliest of heroes with the ball at Wellington Oval yesterday where he bagged a five-wicket haul to carry Cleveland County to a seven-wicket thrashing of St.George's in a low-scoring affair.

Smith, more renowned for his batting prowess, showed he can also deliver with the ball, taking five for 17 off nine overs with two maidens as hosts St.George's were blown away in only 35.3 overs for a paltry total.

High score for the East Enders were the extras (19). Mischeal Paynter made 11 and Ryan Steede who added ten.

Cleveland lost three wickets in reply but were not to be denied as solid knocks from veterans Aaron Adams (33) and Curtis Jackson (29 not out) saw the Eastern Counties side reach their winning target in only 11.5 overs without any further loss.
