Showing some of the sparkle that got them off to a splendid start to the season, Somerset Eagles have to believe that hope has been restored in their ranks after this superb Premier Division result at Bernard Park yesterday in a contest that saw both teams finish with 10 players.

The winning goal came from Darren Dowling, the hard-working striker scoring on a counter-attack after the ten-man Village at the time had forced a spirited goalscoring threat at the opposite end of the park.

Earlier Village took the lead on a penalty by skipper Sammy DeGraff only to see Eagles respond with the equaliser through Aquino Grant.

Village were forced to play majority of the game with 10 men after goalkeepr Zane Hendrickson was sent off by referee Tracy Adams after 21 minutes for viciously pulling down Grant – denying the speedy forward of a goal-scoring opportunity.

With Village holding their own they were awarded a penalty when defender Anthony Rocker, who was ejected for a second bookable offence two minutes from the end, pulled DeGraff by the shirt and the Village skipper made his spot kick good.

Eagles fought back immediately with Dowling turning quickly to smash a thunderbolt of a shot just wide from 16 yards.

The inevitable goal came two minutes later when Shakir Smith, always a threat dribbling down the left flank crossed for Grant to tap home.

Three minutes later, after a Village assault on goal, Dowling scored the go-ahead goal during a quick counter attack.
