Ebbin helps varsity team in volleyball title charge
Bermuda national team volleyball player Jason Ebbin is one of a number of overseas students starring for The University of Edinbugh, Scotland this season.
Ebbin has helped Edinburgh reach second place in the men's first division and with just one game left this season, away at Dundee next month, they are guaranteed a play-off berth.
The former Warwick Academy pupil, who represented Bermuda at the Island Games in Aland earlier this year, has been attending the Scottish university since the start of term.
He said Edinburgh's team were made up of Germans, Italians and Dutch players as well as two Scots.
"Volleyball has been going pretty good, and we've placed second in the league, but we still have one more match to play before the league ends," Ebbin said.
"That will be in January, but I'm not sure when the play-offs are. Volleyball is an active sport here, for both the men's and women's teams. There are two divisions and district levels of play.
"From what I've seen there, many teams are made up of mainly foreign players. For example, our team has players from Germany, Italy, Holland and other countries, but we only have two people from Scotland.
"The University of Edinburgh has been one of the top teams in the university league for several years, and if I remember correctly, it has placed first several times recently."
The 19-year-old said he had been playing volleyball since he was 12 years old and saluted his national team coach, Bill Bucci, for improving his game.
"I think I started to play in year seven or eight at Warwick Academy, so I would have been around 12," he said.
"If I remember right, I don't think there has been a year I haven't played volleyball since. I think what got me into volleyball more was the fact that you are playing in teams, which of course has its ups and downs.
"A lot of my more recent training and play has been with Bill Bucci, who is coach of Warwick Academy's boys' team as well as the men's national team. I think I've progressed a lot thanks to his experience."
The University of Edinburgh have won five of their seven matches so far this campaign.
