FEI confirms Nisbett's Cantaro for Worlds
Bermuda international show jumper Patrick Nisbett now officially has had a second horse approved to compete in the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky later this year.
Nisbett said yesterday from his new Munich base: "The FEI (world governing body) officially approved Cantaro to compete at the World Games."
Nisbett believed that he had qualified Cantaro while competing earlier this year while jumping in Spain on the Sunshine Tour but had to wait for the FEI to officially give the OK.
And Cantaro has been in great form lately.
At the beginning of this month the 10-year-old won at the CSI three-star show in Linz-Ebelsberg, Austria.
Although Nisbett has had the horse for just under four years, he said that this season Cantaro has come into his own.
"We won the big class on the second day in Linz. He is doing very well."
Now Nisbett has qualified two horses for the WEG – the first his rangy big mare Antille. And he will be looking to qualify a third horse before the WEG just in case they others get injured.
And so far this year Nisbett has heard three different 'national anthems' played when he was on the podium in Europe!
In Spain they played one song he had never heard before and then they played Hail to Bermuda.
After winning on Cantaro in Austria a couple of weeks ago the organisers played Hubert Smith's Bermuda is Another World!
Nisbett took it in his stride though. He said yesterday: "When I won in Linz I said to myself 'it will be interesting to see what they play'. And then Bermuda is Another World comes on. I almost keeled over laughing. The organisers were a bit embarrassed."
Nisbett had been based in England for years but decided to move to Germany after the Sunshine Tour.
He said of his base outside of Munich: "It is a big move. There is a teething process but we are getting established. It is a nice area and makes it a bit easier for competing in Europe. Right now I am at a show about an hour away. Normally it would have taken me 16 hours to get here from England."
The Linz show was the first time that Cantaro had competed since the Sunshine Tour and Nisbett said: "I was really happy with the way he performed."
