Island duo excel in overseas meets

Bermuda athletes Shianne Smith and Henry Stevens-Carty both enjoyed outstanding weekends overseas as the pair reached new heights in their sporting careers.

Smith, who recently received $7,000 from the Bermuda Olympic Association out of the Delhi Fund in preparation for the Commonwealth Games, performed superbly in the heptathlon event at the Claremont Classic meet for Heptathlon/Decathlon.

According to Bermuda Track and Field Association president, Donna Watson, she broke the Bermuda national record with 5,127 points and captured first place in all but one event.

Among the disciplines she won were the 100 metres hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 metres, long jump, javelin and 800 metres with all of these representing personal best.

The youngster will be graduating from Cal State University in two months' time and is currently being coached by Lawrence Terry of South Carolina, who has coached many top US athletes in preparation for the Commonwealth Games.

With points earned over the weekend, Smith is now ranked fifth in the CAC rankings and will be training in South Carolina leading up to the CAC Games and then in preparation for the Commonwealth Games.

Meanwhile, Carty won the 800 metres and 1600 metres in the Georgia 4A State Championships.

He won the 800 metres in a time of one minute, 53.25 seconds while running the 1600 metres in 4:24.45.

The Bermudian recently enrolled at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, receiving an educational and athletic scholarship, allowing him to compete in the NCAA Division I Conference.
