'It's PHC's title and Parish are for the drop'
Boulevard Blazers
Coach: Andrew Bascome
Key signings: Dion Stovell, Zane Hendrickson, Michael Parsons
Star men: Angelo Simmons, Michael Parsons, Dion Stovell
Last season's position: Fifth
Derek's prediction: Fourth
If there was an award presented to the team who had the most productive off-season, it would surely go to Boulevard. With key acquisitions including esteemed coach Andrew Bascome, new assistant Richard Todd and Dion Stovell, not to mention the return of local boy Michael Parsons, the Blazers should be able to make a sustained run in the league this time around.
They were within touching distance of the league title two years' ago before the wheels came off, but it may be too early in their transition for them to challenge for the top this campaign.
Dandy Town Hornets
Coach: Meshach Wade
Key signings: Raymond Beach, Damon Ming
Star men: Antoine. Russell, Heys Wolfe, Ernest Signor
Last season's position: Fourth
Derek's prediction: Second
With a team boasting a wealth of youth and experience, Dandy Town will no doubt be in the hunt for the league title this term.
They showed they have plenty in the way of attacking armoury when they dismantled perenial challengers North Village on Tuesday night in the Martonmere Cup.
Promising rookie coach Meshach Wade and the return of marksman Raymond Beach could finally see the St. John's Road side bring the title back home.
But their ability to deliver the goods needed when under the microscope will probably make or break their league title aspirations.
Devonshire Colts
Coach: Ray Jones
Star men: Aljame Zuill, Joseph Butterfield
Last season's position: Sixth
Derek's prediction: Sixth
Once again Colts will rely heavily on their talisman Aljame Zuill whose goals will be crucial if they're to survive, and they must develop a habit of picking up points from the teams in the bottom half of the table.
They looked a little sluggish in the Martonmere Cup recently and victory against new boys Hamilton Parish in their league curtain raiser will be vital in boosting their confidence.
Devonshire Cougars
Coach: Devar Boyles
Key signing: Sean Brangman
Star men: Kwame Steede, Tumani Steede, Omar Butterfield
Last season's position: Third
Derek's prediction: Third
A third place finish last term was deemed a good season by many, especially considering the amount of time some of their key players spent on the treatment table. New coach Devar Boyles has replaced Shawn Smith and will bring fresh ideas to the fold and has plenty of quality in his ranks with the likes of Kwame Steede, Domico Coddington and starlet Tumani Steede.
On paper, they should be challenging for honours although the departure of lethal striker Raymond Beach does represent a blow for the men from the Den.
Cougars are often their own worst enemy, but if they get things right then they could have a very interesting season.
Hamilton Parish
Coach: Mark Jennings
Star men: Kaiya Darrell, Nigel Burgess
Last season's position: First Division champions
Derek's prediction: Seventh
Parish enjoyed a fanstastic 2007-8 and will join the top flight with confidence high. Jennings replaces Meschach Wade at the helm and will have the task of making his side a mainstay in the league. In 'keeper Nigel Burgess they have one of the best in Bermuda and he'll probably have plenty to do this season. Could struggle to survive.
North Village Rams
Coach: Elliott Jennings
Key signings: Jared Peniston, Vincent Minors jr.
Star men: Ralph Bean jr., Kofi Dill, Jemeiko Jennings
Last season's position: Runner-up
Derek's prediction: Fifth
Runners-up last year by the narrowest of margins, can North Village take the final step to their first league title since their 'Triple Crown' season? Not having the likes of Keishen Bean, Sammy DeGraff and Shayne Hollis to call upon certainly won't aid any kind of sustained title challenge. They have had a torrid campaign already, shipping in seven goals in two of their three games and could be in for a long season.
Southampton Rangers
Coach: Albert Smith
Star men: Travis Wilkinson, Reggie Lowe
Last season's position: First Division runners-up
Derek's prediction: Eighth
Somewhat of an unknown quantity, Rangers' efforts to become a Premier Division side for longer than a season could be all in vain. A lack of experience in the top flight will probably cost them. However, don't be surprised to see Rangers in the headlines as they could just spring a surprise or two against some of the so-called big boys.
