Nesbitt wins Grand Prix
Professional Bermuda show jumper Patrick Nesbitt was in the money this weekend when he won the FEI Grand Prix Lipica in Slovenia aboard his mount Cantaro.
Nesbitt won 5,300 euros after he beat out two other riders in a jump off to win the event which was a World Cup qualifier and a 1.60 metre Grand Prix.
Nesbitt was one of three riders with no faults after the first round from a starting field of 29 riders.
In the end the Bermudian was the only double clean rider of the Grand Prix.
And he also placed second on one of his other top mounts, Count Alaric, on the final round of the bronze tour.
Taking second place to Nesbitt in the Grand Prix was Austria's Johann Zuchi on Apollo v Pachern while third place was taken by Primoz Rifelj from host country Slovenia on Dashmir K.
Nesbitt has been having an excellent year.
Late last year he qualified for the World Equestrian Games on his rangy mare Antille.
Those Games will be staged in Kentucky later this year.
But Nesbitt was desperate to qualify a second horse for the WEG and he did so earlier this year on Cantaro while competing on the Sunshine Tour in Spain.
Recently the world governing body, the FEI, officially approved Cantaro to compete in the WEG.
Cantaro has been in great form this year. Not only did he do well in Spain and this past weekend in Slovenia, but also the 10-year-old won at the CSI three-star show in Linz-Ebelsberg, Austria in the Spring.
Nesbett has had the horse for just under four years but it is this year that the mount has been really showing his class.
Nesbett has also made a move from his former base in England to Munich, Germany this year.
He said of his new base: "It is a big move. There is a teething process but we are getting established. It is a nice area and makes it a bit easier for competing in Europe."
