No brotherly love for Russell boys
Dandy Town old-boy Antwan Russell knows there will be no family favours from his big brother Tokia when Somerset Eagles tackle Dandy Town this weekend.
Sunday's showdown at White Hill Field will see the footballing siblings go toe-to-toe for the first time ever – with the younger Russell brother also hoping to put one over on his former Hornets team-mates.
The Bermuda Hogges striker signed for Eagles from Hornets in pre-season and believes he will have to at the top of his game to get the better of defence lynchpin Tokia, who recently signed for the St.John's Field side from PHC.
"The match this weekend will obviously be a special one for me for various reasons," said Russell, who played alongside his brother for the Hogges last term. "I get to play against my old club as well as my brother so it will be a fascinating match-up to say the least.
"This will be the first time I will be playing against my big brother in a competitive match, so it will fun for both of us. I know he isn't going to give me anything so I will have to bring my 'A' game to get the job done. I will have to take the chances I get."
Russell, who scored on Eagles debut against Devonshire Cougars last week, insists he left Hornets for footballing reasons and said he was still on good terms with his ex-team-mates.
"I never had any bad vibes with the club. I left on a good note so when we step on the pitch it's all about football."
Eagles capped off their top-flight return with a confidence boosting victory over defending champions Cougars on the opening day of the season, but Russell has warned against complacency against in-form Hornets.
"We got three points early on but there are still 17 games to play so we won't be overexcited so early in the season," said the former Bermuda international.
"We can't feel like we have done anything after one game. It's a nice atmosphere at the club with everyone fighting for each other so it feels real good be playing alongside these guys.
"We can't think that we have made an impact just yet in the top flight after one game, but what we have done is got off on a good note and we will look to the next match which is against Town.
"No one wins the league in October or November so it will be an interesting season."
Another Eagles player who will have extra motivation for this weekend's game is defender Shakir Smith who also signed from Hornets in pre-season. Like Russell, Smith also crowned his Eagles debut by scoring against Cougars in his team's 3-2 win last weekend.
