PHC fan Brown attends top of the table clash

Premier Ewart Brown is introduced to Devonshire Cougars players prior their Premier Division clash with Boulevard at Devonshire Recreation Club on Sunday.

Premier Ewart Brown braved Sunday's cool and wet weather to attend the top-of-the-table Premier Division clash involving league leaders Boulevard and Devonshire Cougars at the Den.

Brown turned up donning red and black colours but dismissed any thoughts that he might be seen as a Somerset Trojan fan. "Don't read too much into the red shirt. My team is PHC," he smiled.

Brown's presence at the ground might have come as a surprise to many as it has been customary over the years for local dignitaries to only make appearances at major cup finals.

Asked what prompted his decision to turn up at a regular league match, Brown replied: "I love football and when I was in England recently, where they are immersed in football, it just got my fan juices flowing again.

"I picked up a BFA (Bermuda Football Association) schedule the other day, chose a game and went! In fact, my love of football had me up later than I should have been last night to watch West Ham and Sunderland."

Brown dabbled in the sport during his time in college abroad and remains a big fan of Brazil and Manchester United.

Although Sunday's match at the Den ended in a 1-1 stalemate, Brown was encouraged by some of the intricate moves being played out on the pitch.

"I enjoyed the game, especially early in the first half where I could see the short passing. That's a part of the game I really enjoy watching," he said.

"I left the game before it was over, but I told a couple of people before I left that I thought the game was going to end in a draw. I could just tell the two teams were very evenly matched. I'd like to see them go at it again."
