Saltus finish five game tour unbeaten
Saltus Grammar School's senior football team returned to the Island earlier this week after a gruelling but succesfull tour to Toronto where they won all five of their games.
The opener was against Holy Trinity School, Courtice, who had just clinched the area championship.
A quiet first half was followed by a nine goal second half as Saltus ran out 5-4 winners.
Jake Fox got on the end of Rakeem DeShields cross to score the first goal for Saltus, before Dante Leverock weaved between two defenders for the second.
The Canadians made it 2-1, before Rakeem DeShields met Terryn Fray's cross to re-establish a two-goal cushion. But Holy Trinity kept plugging away and made it 3-2.
Fray then met a Leverock cross to put the Bermudian side further ahead, before Trinty again pulled another one back. Philip Parsons finished a fine individual effort to allow Saltus a 5-3 lead.
However a defensive slip in the closing minutes allowed the Canadian school to reduce the deficit once again.
Head coach Jon Beard, accompanied by Head of PE Timmy Figureido, had little time to work on the defensive issues as the team took on Toronto school, Cresent College.
However, the lessons were learned and Saltus controlled the game to win 4-1.
Fox and DeShields continued their partnership as Fox put Saltus ahead, before Leverock again danced his way through the defence to add the second.
DeShields turned provider once again as he put through one of the youngsters, Zeiko Lewis, for the third.
Alton Roberts forced home a Fray corner to get the fourth. Crescent's consolation goal came late in the game.
The team was up early the next morning to take on Oakville FC.
The club is the largest in North America, with 11,000 youth players, and the Technical Director is former Bermuda resident Brett Mosen.
The match was very close and competitive.
Leverock scored from a Fray cross, and then turned provider to put Lewis through, and to see Saltus finish 2-0 winners.
The Saturday afternoon game was played in St. Catherines, Ontario, against Ridley College.
This was also a very competitive game in which the Pembroke school again won –2-0.
Leverock finished off a cross from Lewis, with Fox grabbing the second from a Caleb Crockwell through ball.
Young goalkeeper Romario Foote made an outstanding save in the final minutes to keep his second clean sheet.
There was a sizeable Bermudian crowd there including former Bermudian great Eversley Lewis, who plied his football trade with Aberdeen FC in Scotland.
He was pleased to be able to watch his relative Zeiko.
Sunday morning saw some tired legs trying to get to grips with hosts Appleby College, in Oakville.
Lewis put home a cross from fellow youngster Ian Simmons to allow Saltus to go into half time 1-0 up.
Leverock continued his goal a game average as he combined with DeShields who kept his composure to give his team a 2-0 win.
