Simmons holds own against world's elite

International One Design (IOD) skipper, Penny Simmons, did the Island proud in Stenungsund, Sweden, last week where he placed fourth competing against the world's elite at the IOD World Championships.

The veteran local sailor managed to position himself thick in the hunt for top honours heading into the fourth and final day of racing but eventually fell off the pace.

Still, Simmons was satisfied with a top five finish that was more than enough to reaffirm his status as a contender at this level and add to his remarkable legacy competing at the IOD World Championships.

The Bermudian sailor is a six-time IOD world champion and has also finished runner up in the prestigious regatta on eight other occasions.

"Me and the fellows that finished in the top three (Urban Ristorp, Charles Vanvoorhis and John Burnham) had bad races (on the final day)," he said.

"I was pleased to finish fourth but it could've been better."

The veteran sailor qualified for this year's IOD World Championships last March when he pipped local rivals Craig Davis and Patrick Cooper for the right to represent Bermuda in Sweden.

If it was any consolation, past Vrengen Gold Cup winner Davis accompanied the 70-year-old Simmons in Sweden as crew along with Greg Lawrence, D'Arcy Betschart and Simmons' wife Sasha who is the sister of IOD class president Jordy Walker.

Ristorp was not at his best on the final day of racing but did just enough to preserve his lead and claim to top honours after three decades of trying.

Two-time defending IOD world champion, Richard Pearce of USA, finished in eighth overall.

Fitted Dinghy action resumes this weekend in St.George's Harbour.
