Sir Viv: Time for team to stand up
West Indies legend Sir Viv Richards has urged Bermuda's cricketers to "stand up and be counted" when they take on the Windies in next month's triangular series also involving hosts Canada in Toronto.
Bermuda will tackle Test opponents West Indies at the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club on August 26 just four days after taking on hosts Canada at the same venue in a series Sir Viv hopes to see the Island's cricketers thrive in.
Gus Logie's men are fresh off a stunning display in Toronto earlier this month where they defeated Canada 2-1 in a One Day International series and chalked up a first Intercontinental Cup win in three years against the same opponents.
Sir Viv has now challenged Bermuda's players to strive for bigger and better things.
"Bermuda appear to be in a bit of a transition stage, quite similar to the West Indies at the moment," the former Windies skipper told The Royal Gazette.
"Having worked with the Bermuda team they have some very good players who deserve an opportunity to perform.
"I hope a series like this will challenge them to stand up and deliver and be counted."
The Wisden Cricketer of the Century is no stranger to Bermuda's having toured the Island in 1984 with his native Antigua.
Many will recall Sir Viv's whirlwind century (157) against Bermuda at Somerset Cricket Club, a performance that was eventually overshadowed by son of the soil Clevie Wade who hammered a courageous ton (127) off an Antigua attack spearheaded by former Windies fast bowlers Andy Roberts and Winston Benjamin.
Sir Viv visited Bermuda's shores last October and during his brief stay had the opportunity to assess the Island's senior cricket team as part of his duties as a Standford 20/20 Legend.
"If I had any advice for them (Bermuda) it would be to back yourself and enjoy the game," he said.
"I know over in Bermuda the people are very passionate about the game.
"So the players will have a lot of support when they play against West Indies and Canada in the summer series."
