Some lows . . . but many highs for 2009

• Kenyans Joel Melly and Salome Kosgei won the Male and Female Half-Marathon respectively, while Ethiopian Teklu Terefera Deneke and Russian Margaret Plaksina won the Male and Female Marathon on the final day of the International Race Weekend.

England's Neil Speaight and Jamaica's Kenia Sinclair won their respective Elite Front Street Mile races, with Jennifer Alen and Riaan Naude winning the adult local sections.

• As many as three harness pony drivers were banned from competing at Vesey Street after their ponies tested positive for banned performance enhancing substances during random drugs scans, sparking a drugs scandal within the sport and the governing body, The Driving Horse and Pony Club.

It is understood two ponies tested positive for caffeine while the other was found to have been injected with Bute, an anti flammatory substance that derives from the same family as aspirin.

• Devarr Boyles agrees to take over as the BFA's youth director, thus ending the lengthy search for someone to fill the role.

FEBRUARY

• Bermuda Football Association vote to have expand the Premier Division to 10 teams, meaning there wouldn't be any automatic relegation at the end of the 2008/09 campaign. With the addition to the top tier, there would also be an addition of other clubs to the First Division

• Mark Mello, president of the Bermuda Hockey Federation, was called upon to resign following his scathing attack on women's national team coaches Gareth Tavares and Andrew Travis with the side competing at the Pan Am Games on local shores.

• Khano Smith traded to New York Red Bulls from Seattle Sounders.

• Garth Thompson and Kim Naude pedalled their way to the 2009 National Mountain Biking Championships at Ferry Reach Park.

• The Clyde Best Youth Tournament that included Sochaux from France and Colorado Rapids from the MLS battled for bragging rights at the U-15 level at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

MARCH

• Delyone Borden refused to take part in Bermuda's second match on tour of Grenada in protest of a pay dispute between the Bermuda Cricket Board and his employer

• Olympic swimmer Roy Allan Burch was due to be named Male Athlete of the Year, however, Cabinet overturned the decision of the committee and named James Stout as the winner. Kiera Atiken won Female Athlete of the Year.

Burch was denied the award after he made comments about a lack of support for the sport of swimming.

• Tariqah Walikraam and Eric Plisko won the Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships at Mid Ocean Club. Walikraam won two and one over Helen Stovell, while Plisko hammered Santo Lafoca eleven and ten.

• FC Fulham monitor Tre Ming after impressing the English Premier League club while on trial last year October.

• Tumani Steede signs for PDL side Reading Rage.

• The Commercial League was axed as the BFA plan takes shape. BAA were the only club to vote against the proposal, with clubs being given the option to move into the Over-30's Masters League.

• Dwayne Leverock bowls Bermuda to victory over Turks Academy in Pretoria, South Africa as the Island prepared for World Cup Qualifiers.

APRIL

• Bermuda's 2011 World Cup qualifying bid got off to the worse possible start as the Islanders crashed to a four-wicket defeat at the hands of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The loss was followed by defeats to Kenya, and Holland before wins over Oman and Uganda ended the side's hopes of another final.

• Bermuda's young Carifta Games team returned home with their heads held high after claiming six medals this time around – five more then a year ago. The haul included two silvers and four bronzes.

• Angel Cabrera earned the first spot to this year's PGA Grand Slam of Golf, defeating Kenny Perry in a play-off at the Masters.

• Bermuda returned home with 12 medals from the Carifta Swimming Championships led by Rebecca Sharpe, who won a hat-trick of gold medals.

• The Davis Cup side returned home after being promoted to Group III in El Salvador. The side finished second behind Aruba having seen off Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, and the US Virgin Islands. Gavin Manders etched his name into history by being the most successful Bermudian at the prestigious tournament. He finished undefeated in his singles matches and 6-1 overall.

• Boulevard beat Dandy Town 5-3 to win the FA Cup, their first Cup triumph in any competition in 17 years. A brace by skipper Takeyhi Walker and single strikes by Jahmah Samuels and Reiko Trott went along with a Seion Darrell own goal to guide the side to an unassailable lead early on.

• Greg Rose saves Devonshire Colts' blushes after his penalty shoot-out heroics kept the side in the Premier Division at the expense of St. David's.

MAY

• Gus Logie announces he will step down as the coach of the Bermuda national cricket team when his contract expires in September.

• Devonshire Cougars are announced as the representatives for Bermuda in the CONCACAF Champions' League in 2010. The club's participation was confirmed by BFA General Secretary David Sabir at the governing bodies awards ceremony.

• Devonshire Rec. were crowned the Open League champions following their draw with St. David's at the National Sports Centre.

• Hamilton Parish crush St. George's 70-57 to win the play-off final of the CellularOne Basketball League at Bermuda College. Che Powell and Calvert Lee chipped in 20 and 18 respectively to guide the side to victory.

• Chris Estwanik and Victoria Fiddick win the 100th edition of the Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby, while Tyler Butterfield and Jennifer Alen come second in the men's and women's race respectively.

JUNE

• Rising basketball star Erica Woods was invited to play for Great Britain Under-20 Women's Olympic development team. The 17-year-old also announced that she will play basketball at Marshall University.

• Jessie Kirkland and his St. Mary's College teammates celebrated their school's first Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Spring National Championship in seven years in San Francisco, California.

• Robin Hood and MR Onions were included in the First Division after a unanimous approval to become full members of the BFA.

• Malachi Jones and Delyone Borden get recalled to the national setup after both were left out of the World Cup qualifiers squad. Jones comes back into the fold after more than a year in international exile.

• Lucas Glover was the second golfer to book his name at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf after winning the US Open.

• Bitter disappointment for 'Big Bear' as the Bermuda boat was forced out of this year's Marion to Bermuda with a ripped mainsail.

• Tributes poured in for Cougars defender Jeremy DeShields after he died of a suspected heart attack. The popular footballer played an integral part in the club's first ever league title to go along with Friendship, Martonmere and Dudley Eve success.

JULY

• Island Games athletes return to Bermuda with an extraordinary haul of medals after competing in bi-annual event.

• A tornado wrecks Bermuda Under-19's hopes of advancing to the final qualifying round for the Under-19 World Cup as their match with Canada was abandoned with the Islanders in a comfortable position to win the match.

• Tara Lambert and Gavin Manders reigned supreme in the Argus Open, beating Jackie Lambert and Andy Bray respectively.

• Nine cricketers were summoned to a hearing by the BCB following a series of on-field incidents.

• Arantxa King was rewarded for her outstanding work on the track as she was named an All-American at Stanford University.

• Stewart Cink books his place to the PGA Grand Slam of Golf by winning the British Open after beating legend Tom Watson in a play-off.

AUGUST

• St. George's retain the Cup Match trophy after the 2009 edition of the match fizzled to a draw at Wellington Oval. Somerset's Janeiro Tucker hit his third century to move into second place all-time in total runs scored, while St. George's skipper Lionel Cann notched his first century in the summer classic.

• Chris Foggo claims his second Safe Hands award after his sterling job behind the stumps for the champions.

• New York Red Bulls release Khano Smith after the Bermudian failed to make an impact in his short stint at the club.

• Swimmers Nick Thomson, Keira Aitken and Roy Allen Burch all set new records while at the World Swimming Championships in Rome.

• David Hemp is announced as new national team skipper, replacing Iriving Romaine at the helm with protege Stephen Outerbridge is named as deputy.

• Veteran golfer Robert Vallis clinched the biggest victory of his career when he won the 41st Senior British Amateur Championships at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland.

• Bermuda Hogges last match of the season ends in drama as striker Stephen Astwood scored a brace and then arrested at half time of the side's match against real Maryland.

• Mark Selley Jr. and Jordan Every marked their Round the Island powerboat race debuts with a victory as they outlasted their nearest rivals to take line honours.

• Tyler Butterfield claimed a notable second place in the 5430 Long Course Triathlon in Colorado.

• Michelle Pearson helped the US Women's eight team to a gold medal at the World Junior Rowing Championships.

• Tyler Smith claimed yet another double at the the Coca Cola ITF junior international tennis tournament in St. Lucia, winning both the 14 and under singles and doubles titles.

• Reggie Lambe made his first appearance for Ipswich Town in a thrilling penalty shoot-out win over Shrewsbury Town.

• Y.E. Yang completed the foursome for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf after he became the youngest Asian-born winner of a major. Yang's win at the PGA Championship ended Tiger Woods' run of winning all 14 of his major titles when leading heading into the final round.

• Bermuda slumped to defeat at home to Uganda by seven wickets in their Intercontinental Shield match. With a threat of Hurricane Bill hitting the Island, only one of three 50-over matches was played, with the visitors claiming victory by 45 runs and sending coach Gus Logie out on a losing note.

• Domico Coddington was named to the USL-D2 All-Star team for the 2009 season.

SEPTEMBER

• Dwayne Pearman was promoted to head professional at Port Royal Golf Course following the departure of Eric West.

• St. David's made it two titles in two days when they won both the Eastern Counties title along with the Premier Division 50-over title. They would later add the Twenty20 tile to their collection to cap off a memorable year.

• Karen Bordage became the third Bermudian to qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii after a storming performance in the Subaru Ironman. She joined Karen Smith and Julia Hawley as the locals who will carry the flag.

• Boulevard risked losing their top flight status after they were left without a home field for the 2009/10 season. The club were homeless since they left BAA Field at the end of last term. In the end, however, they were spared the drop by cross town rivals Dandy Town who offered them their St. John's Field facilities.

• Michael Sims moved up three spots on the Nationwide Tour money list with a 39th place in the Mexico Open.

• Tyler Butterfield came home in third place at the prestigious Monaco Triathlon.

• Andrew Bascome verbally agreed to become Robin Hood's coach for their inaugural season in the First Division.

• Evan Naude placed 36th at the World Triathlon Championships in Australia to be the fastest of the Island's Olympic-distance age group competitors, competing in the 30-40 age bracket. Other Bermudians competing included Kent Richardson, Peter Hallatt, Russell Burgess and Travis Cooper, all running in various age categories.

• Preparations for the first Corona League match to be held at the newly laid synthetic field at BAA were in their final stages as the pitch was in the touch up phase weeks ahead of the first game.

• Bermuda finished sixth at the inaugural New York Yacht Club invitational Cup. The Cup was won by the home team.

• Tom Barras successfully defended his Bermuda Grand Prix title, winning two of the three stages to take top honours.

OCTOBER

• Olga Firsova won the PartnerRe 5K women's-only race and the Crime Stoppers 5K.

• Ben Ainslie puts his name on the King Edward VII Gold Cup for the first time with the help of crew Matt Cornwell, Iain Percy and Christian Kamp. Bermuda's Blythe Walker finished the competition in seventh place.

• Five Bermudians travelled to David Bascome's Baltimore Blast in search of fulfilling professional dreams. Logan Alexander, Angelo Simmons, Aquino Grant, Coolridge Durham and Dennis Russell all made the trek to the trials.

• Karen Smith, Julia Hawley, and Karen Bordage all finished in the top 15 of their respective age groups at the Ironman World Championships.

• Khano Smith signed for Lincoln City in League Two in England.

• Bermuda gymnasts travel to England to take on the world's best in the World Gymnastics Championships.

• A last round meltdown from Michael Sims may have cost him his chance to play on the Nationwide Tour next year. Needing to finish in the top 60, stats showed Sims in 61st.

• Lucas Glover wins the PGA Grand Slam of Golf by five strokes over Angel Cabrera at the Port Royal Golf Course.

• Team Bermuda completed one of the most successful weekends at the Elite Caribbean Cycling Championships, taking second place overall behind only Puerto Rico. The team consisted of Deanna Thomson, Flora Duffy and Garth Thomson.

NOVEMBER

• Husband and wife Riaan Naude and Kim McMullen made it a family double when both took individual honours in the season-ending Rubis Energy Bermuda Triathlon.

• Logan Alexander turned professional and joins the Baltimore Blast. He will play once his visa gets sorted out.

• North Village won the Dudley Eve final after beating PHC in a penalty shoot-out, while Lady Cougars beat Lady Rams 2-1 to hoist the BFA Cup.

• Classic All Blacks crushed the Classic Lions 24-0 to win the World Rugby Classic held at the National Sports Centre.

• Lamont Marshall smashed the Bermuda 10K record with a sensational time of 31 minutes and two seconds in the Capital Company's Washington Veterans Day 10K in the US.

• Chris Leverock bowled a perfect game for the Royal Gazette in the Commercial League at Warwick Lanes.

• Lamont Marshall and Victoria Fiddick ran out victors in the Bacardi 8K.

• Clyde Best won a top Caribbean prize at the second annual Caribbean Awards Sports Icons ceremony in Bahamas.

• Tyler Butterfield finished fourth in the Cozumel Ironman.

DECEMBER

• Brian Wellman headed the list of Hall of Famers that include Charles Marshall, Michael Preece, Allan Simmons, Stanley Burgess, William Tucker and Bill Tucker.

• Kirk Henefeld defeats Delroy Cambridge to win the Gosling's Invitational.

• Andrew Bascome threatened to leave Boulevard if the side didn't get their act together.

• Lamont Marshall beat out Jay Donawa to become the Men's Open National Cross-Country Champion. Victoria Fiddick won the women's Masters, while Tracy Wright won the Men's Masters.

• Aljame Zuill made a sensational switch from Devonshire Colts to Cougars in the Christmas window.

• Freddy Hall earned MLS trials but turned the opportunity down for a trial at Charlton Athletic in League One.

• Chris Crumpler led a Bermuda Select squad to Las Vegas for an international basketball tournament.

• Daniel Augustus was invited to play in the prestigious Dixie Amateur tournament.

• New boys Robin Hood ended the first half of their inaugural season in the First Division on top of the charts.

• Chris Estwanik and Victoria Fiddick won the Male and Female road running athletes of the year.

• Bermuda Hogges confirmed the switch from the USL-D2 to the PDL Division.
