St. David's striker Aaron Cannonier praised his side for their team unity as they held off St. George's in a torrential down pour at Devonshire Rec. last night to book their place in the First Division Shield final.

Goals from Sean Boddington and Arti Dell Tyrell were enough to see the defending Shield champions through to the final to be held at the National Sports Centre at the expense of their East End rivals.

Allan Douglas Jr. scored St. George's lone goal.

Boddginton got the ball rolling for St. David's inside the first fifteen minutes when the striker was at the right place at the right time to slam home his chance to put his team ahead.

However, it didn't take long before St. George's had a reply of their own through Allan Douglas who levelled matters just before the half.

But Tyrell struck the hammer blow midway through the second half, sending his side through to a second successive final.

"It was a hard fought match, the conditions were difficult but in the end we came out on top and move on to the finals," said Cannonier.

"We fought hard tonight, it was a team effort.

"Without everyone coming together this wouldn't be possible.

"Before we would have players arguing amongst themselves, and now we are gelling at the right time.

"We wanted to get back up to the 'Carpet' and defend what is ours and keep the trophy in St. David's.

He added: "We are looking to get promoted at this point but a trophy for the Club would be a bonus as well.

"We are coming together right now and getting away from individual skills on the pitch because teamwork wins trophies.

"The sky is the limit for our team right now."

n Last night's Friendship semi-final match between North Village and Southampton Rangers at Devonshire Rec. was abandoned at half time due to a water-logged pitch with the score at 1-1.

Both teams battled manfully throughout the first period although the heavy rain rendered it almost impossible to play football.

At the break referee Anthony Mouchette decided enough was enough and called the game off.
