Tournament outcome could rest on run rate
Bermuda can win but still lose. Canada can lose but still win. And the USA have to win and hope Bermuda beat Canada in a last-ball thriller.
It's the final day of the ICC Americas Championship today, and the outcome is about as clear as Mill Creek.
As it stands, Canada have eight points while Bermuda and USA both have six. The simplest outcome would see Canada beat Bermuda and win the tournament. If that happens, then Bermuda will more than likely finish third unless Cayman Islands cause a massive upset and beat USA at Southampton Oval today.
If Bermuda win, then it all comes down to run rate. Canada's current run rate is +3.426, Bermuda's is +2.008, while USA are further back on +1.058.
A team's run rate is arrived at by dividing the number of runs scored by overs faced, and subtracting the number of runs scored divided by overs bowled.
Even so, Bermuda won't know what they have to do until lunch time today because if Canada bat first, then Bermuda will have to figure out how many overs they need to score the runs in. But if Bermuda bat first, then they will need to calculate how quickly they need to bowl Canada out, in order to win the tournament.
Confused, you will be. Just be glad you're not the one responsible for calculating it over by over.
