Tournament players honour tennis pioneer

The inaugural WER Joell Memorial tennis tournament is currently underway at the WER Joell Stadium, with some of Bermuda's best senior and junior players looking to end the season on a winning note.

The last ranked tournament on the calendar, which will reach its conclusion this weekend, is named after a pioneer of local tennis, William Ernest Rudolph Joell.

Stafford Flooring, whose owner Richard Stafford is a grandson of WER Joell, are sponsoring the tournament.

David Lambert, president of Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA), said the time had come to acknowledge the man who had helped racial integration in the sport.

"This is the first ever WER Joell Tournament and we are pleased to have this tournament on the calendar," said Lambert. "All of our top players in both the senior categories as well as the juniors have entered.

"The fact that our best players along with the future stars are playing in this event is a testament to his legacy. Knowing Mr. Joell, if he were here he would be excited with the turn-out.

"A few of our juniors are playing in the 'B' divisions and obviously have a chance of making a splash in this tournament."

The tournament concludes on Saturday. Prize presentations will take place after the finals.
