'We won't get carried away' says Parsons
Michael Parsons said Boulevard's Charity Cup victory over Devonshire Cougars will have no bearing on the rest of the season, but believes the win does prove that the dressing room has not been affected by Blazers' turbulent summer.
It's been a far from ideal pre-season for Boulevard who have had to rely on a ground-share with Dandy Town to preserve their league status, not to mention having their coach Andrew Bascome constantly linked with a move away from the club.
But veteran midfielder Parsons insists his team-mates have taken little notice of the rumours and off-field problems and are fully focused on their ambition to win the Premier Division title this season.
"We (the players) are not really concerned with the stuff that goes on off the field," Parsons said after Blazers' 1-0 triumph over Cougars at the Wellington Oval yesterday.
"The players are responsible for what goes on the pitch and we let our president, Stephen Proctor, and the backroom people take care of all the things that go on behind the scenes.
"As far Andrew (Bascome), well, we were never worried about him leaving Blazers. He's built a strong, young team and one which will only get better."
Parsons said Blazers would not be getting carried away with their narrow win over nine-man Cougars in yesterday's Charity Cup and considered the season curtain raiser as merely a workout ahead of the league campaign.
"Of course, it's nice to win another cup but we won't be celebrating this victory as it doesn't really mean much," said the Bermuda Hogges man. "The real business for us is the league and we're confident of building on our FA Cup success of last season.
"This match was more about conditioning than anything else, but I thought we played okay in patches and the win will give our confidence a boost. Cougars had some good goalscoring chances but didn't take them and we were able to take the lead.
"We didn't have to go chasing the game in the second half and knew we we're going to have to do some defending to preserve the win."
