West looks to bounce back in Argentina

Improving: Eric West

Professional golfer Eric West will tee off at next month's Abierto del Litoral in Argentina confident of improving upon this week's disappointing performance at the $30,000 Monterey Open in California.

Playing at the famous Del Monte Golf Course in Pebble Beach, the Bermudian carded a two-over-par 74 on the last day to finish the 54-hole event at 219 for the tournament to grab a share of 35th position.

West, who celebrates his 25th birthday early next month, also shot a two-over-par 74 during the first round and a one-under-par 71 on the second to make the cut competing against a formidable field in California.

The Bermudian pro is now keen to make a return to the Tour de Las Americas where he placed 12th, his best finish to date on the lucrative tour, at last September's $70,000 Taurus Abierto de Peru in Peru.

Reflecting upon his most recent performance, West lamented: "I never really felt like myself over the three days and I haven't shot over par for a tournament in awhile.

"I shot three over par for the week which wasn't very good."

West struggled to cope with the undulating and lightening fast greens at the 6,365-yard, par 72 Del Monte layout.

"This is one of those golf courses where the greens are very undulating. From front to back they have about 20 or 30 feet of slope so if you are above the hole it is very difficult. The greens were also very fast.

"Lately I have been hitting the ball fairly well but I never got rolling this week. I left myself above the hole a lot and just did not hit enough greens to give myself enough good opportunities for birdies.

"But my short game is improving and I am hitting and putting the ball a lot better. Golf is just one of those things you have to strike while the iron is hot; you just have to keep playing and learn how to score."

Despite this week's setback, West is confident he can retain his Tour de las Americas card come season's end.

"I am playing well enough and to be honest I would like to win one of these events," he added. "My putting is getting better and if I can just get a good ball-striking day I know I can probably shoot a 63 pretty easily.

"At some of these Moonlight events (Moonlightgolf.com Tour) I have had it at six or seven shots under-par at some stage of the round."

West earned his Tour de las Americas card last March and since then has been a multiple winner on the Moonlightgolf.com Tour in the US.
