Youngsters shine as Blazers continue to set the pace
Boulevard midfielder Takeyhi Walker has called on the younger players in his squad to continue their current form as the league leaders face champions Devonshire Cougars tomorrow at St. John's Field.
Blazers have suffered a host of injuries – including Mel Gibbons, Keemo Bean, Hobte Burrows and Walker himself – in recent matches resulting in the younger players in the squad getting chance to prove their worth.
And prove their worth they have as the side are four points clear of the pack and have a chance to add to that as they play the two teams immediately behind them in the next two weeks.
Walker, for one, is excited about the how the fringe players are taking their chance to make an impact and showing their value.
"The younger guys in the team are keeping us in a position to win the league with their efforts in recent weeks, so let's hope they continue their form," said Walker.
"It is very important to have our younger guys that are coming through involved and ready for times like this because when injuries arise, teams need players to step up and fill in and we have got that so far.
"Right now I'm working on my injury, but we have a few injuries like Mel (Gibbons), Keemo (Bean) and Hobte (Burrows), who are all out."
Boulevard have an opportunity to edge further away from the champions, who are already five points back heading into the showdown, and solidify their preseason prediction of hoisting the league title come March.
Also on the cards for Blazers is a clash next week with second-placed PHC, who are four points back and play Somerset Eagles tomorrow.
Wins in these two matches would see them potentially 10 points ahead after next week if results go their way with a game against Devonshire Colts their last first-half fixture.
Walker will be hoping his side can do what is necessary and start to open a gap at the top of the summit heading into Christmas.
"It is a blessing that we have a chance to increase the lead over the champions ourselves because we would like to do things ourselves and not rely on others to do things for us.
"If we can get through the rest of our games in the first half unscathed, then we will go into the second half in great shape.
"I said at the beginning of the season that we have depth and our fringe players come in without fear of playing so we are in good stead at the moment.
"If we can beat Cougars and PHC drop points against Eagles, then we will be looking like the team that everyone expects to win the league after a mediocre start.
"We also play PHC who are in second, so if we can get those points, we will be in a great spot.
"We wanted to go into Christmas in a spot to contend and at the moment we are, so we are pleased with our position but the job isn't done yet."
Elsewhere tomorrow Dandy Town will be looking for a much-needed win against Southampton Rangers when the two sides meet at Southampton Oval.
Town have won only one of their last five league matches and need to get back on track against a consistent Rangers side whot won't be taken for granted.
Second-placed PHC tackle Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field in an-all western affair, while Hamilton Parish will look to get off the foot of the table with a win over Devonshire Colts.
All matches kick off at 3 pm.
