Rising track star Tyrone Smith and talented basketball player Jenaya Wade-Fray have been crowned Male and Female Athletes of the Year after beating out a list of nominees for the prestigious awards.Smith was crowned Bermuda's number one ahead of triathlete Tyler Butterfield and Aaron Evans on Saturday night at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel. He became only the second Bermudian athlete to claim a gold medal at the CAC Games by winning the men's long jump in Puerto Rico last summer. The 26-year-old leapt into the history books with a personal best of 8.22 metres to follow in the footsteps of legendary high jumper Clarence (Nicky) Saunders who grabbed gold at the 1987 CAC Games. The long jumper was also selected for the Americas Cup team to compete in the Continental Cup for his gold medal effort at the Games.Admitting that it was a great honour to receive the award, Smith thanked those who nominated him as well as supporters who cheered him on over the past year.“It feels great to get this award, it definitely gives you added incentive to continue doing what you are doing,” said Smith. “It is good to get the recognition of all the hard work you are putting in and it is an honour to be considered the best .“I am very happy at the moment.“It was a great year for me, certainly being selected for the Continental team was a huge honour and just getting to compete against the world's best athletes was phenomenal.“I had a lot of support throughout the year. I performed well enough to get a gold medal at the CAC Games, and also going over to Europe and being involved in the Diamond League and a few other meets helped make it a great year for me.“I am going to start competing again in April, and then after that we will go back over to Europe and hopefully do some good things.”Wade-Fray took home the female award, beating out former winners Flora Duffy and Kiera Aitken for the top prize. She became the first Bermudian woman basketball player to represent Great Britain as the team look to qualify for this year's Eurobasket Championships in Poland. Her selection followed an outstanding season with the University of Tennessee team in Chattanooga, USA.“I am very grateful for the award, I didn't expect this but I am very thankful and I wish to thank all my supporters and those who have been there for me throughout.“This whole process has been different since playing for Great Britain. I am starting to get used to it and I am doing something that I love so it is great.“I am injured at the moment so I am rehabbing but hopefully I will be available to play for Great Britain again this summer.”Also picking up silverware on the night were Jeneko Place and Emma Franklin who were named Male and Female Junior Athletes of the Year respectively. It was the first time juniors had been recognised at the annual presentations. There were also a number of other trophies up for grabs including the Special Achievement Awards, Bermuda Sport Citation Awards and Appreciation Awards as well as a Minister's Award and Special Recognition Awards.Special Recognition Awards went to the Bermuda men's squash team who won gold at the Caribbean Squash Championships and the Bermuda Rugby Under-19 national team who won their Caribbean Championships in Bahamas.
