Strength in depth will be key to success - Lemieux
Bermuda Volleyball Association (BVA) chairman Chris Lemieux believes the depth in his squad can go a long way in deciding how the men’s and women’s teams fare at the Island Games in the Isle of Wight. Both sides will be looking to give a good account of themselves at the Games, with the men’s side having the harder of the two roads to the podium.Admitting expectations are high for both teams, Lemieux believes the added depth to the teams may be the deciding factor in how far they progress this time around.“Both teams look very solid, and I’m happy to report they are also healthy from an injury standpoint,” said Lemieux.“Each team has been training since early this year, twice a week, and just recently three times a week as we lead up to the games.“In addition, the men have a full squad of 12 players which we didn’t have in 2009, which gives the team some extra depth on the bench which can be invaluable over the course of the tournament. Each of the men’s and women’s team is accented with junior players who have demonstrated the athletic ability and commitment to warrant inclusion on the senior national teams.“Our expectations are high for each of the teams this year, although the men’s have a draw that’s very difficult, including the previous Games winner Saaremaa in their group.“If the team can focus on passing and defence, they have the offensive talent to score points and win matches.”Bermuda has competed in every Games since 2003. The best men’s volleyball team performance is a silver medal, while the women’s highest placing is fourth.Noting players such as Daniel Fiddick and Brad Meindersma on the men’s side, and Chantal Brown and Heather Wearmouth on the women’s side as key players in the teams, Lemieux reckons the sides will go far if these vital cogs perform to their peak.“Every game will be critical as only the top two teams from each pool move on to the medal rounds,” he said. “We’re obviously setting our goal for a top two finish in the round-robin.“We have a few players that people should look out for, the first being youngster Daniel Fiddick who plays in the power position. He is one of a few players on the Bermuda squad with a jump serve which, if he executes consistently, can be a very good weapon for the team.“The other player to watch is the middle, Brad Meindersma.“Brad competed in Aland in 2009 with the team, but relatively speaking is new to the sport of volleyball.“He’s tall and has a very good vertical jump that allows him to hit well out of the middle position, but more importantly block.” Lemieux added: “On the ladies side, there is considerable experience and a really well-rounded team in general. If I had to suggest players to watch it would be the setting duo of Chantal Brown and Heather Wearmouth.“The girls are running a 6-2 offence this year, which means they have two setters on the court at all times but all six players attack when in the front row, with the setter always penetrating from the back row.“Chantal has performed well in the past winning multiple awards for setter of the tournament, so this will hopefully set the bar for Heather to reach as well. Defensively they also have a very good libero in Beth Rae.”Men’s team: Brian Amaro, Ian Bucci, Daniel Fiddick, Jon Gazzard, Eric Haller, Seb Iaxx, Gary LeBlanc, Chris Lemieux, Joshua Malpas, Brad Meindersma, Philipp Miehe, Jon NoseworthyWomen’s team: Lianne Leonardi, Elisabeth Rae, Chantal Brown, Heather Wearmouth, Adrianna Robinson, Mi’Jon Bridges, Lisa LeBlanc, Allison LaCoursiere, Emma Vacas, Sarah Maybury, Lauren Wilson
