Basketball teams lead the way

Bermuda men’s and women’s basketball teams marched into the semi-finals of their respective events at the Island Games in the Isle of Wight yesterday.The men’s team, who won a gold medal in Aland two years’ ago, defeated Cayman Islands 66-63 in their play-off match, while the women’s side triumphed 36-24 over Isle Man. The women will now meet Menorca for a place in the final today.Sailor Jason Saints is pushing for a podium place in the Laser Radials with the youngster in third position after finishing fifth and fourth in yesterday’s races. He is closely pursued by compatriot Sara Jane Adderley, a former Pan-Am Games silver medallist, who is in fifth.Veteran sailor Brett Wright remains in fifth place in the Laser Standard class after coming eighth and ninth yesterday, one position ahead of Rockal Evans who posted a sixth and fifth.In the team sailing event Bermuda are sitting pretty in third with three races remaining.Sprinter Melissa Clarke followed up her silver medal in the 400 metres by qualifying for the final of the 200. She finished second her heat in a time of 25.66 seconds.Tyler Smith reaffirmed her growing reputation as the Island’s most promising tennis player by advancing to the semi-finals of the women’s singles event. The 14-year-old defeated Karen Faragher of the Isle of Man 6-3, 6-2. Smith will meet Gibraltar’s Amanda Carreras today.Gavin Manders has also made the semis of the men’s singles following his 6-3, 1-0 win over Bruce Wagstaff of Isle of Man, who was forced to retire.In the men’s doubles David Thomas and Naim Azhar beat Eduardo Torres and Panav Jha of Cayman Islands 6-3, 6-3 10-6 to move into the quarter-finals.But the Lambert sisters, Tara and Jackie, lost in their quarter-final tie to Aland’s Linda Jansson and Pauline Nordlund 6-3, 6-3.Slipping to third place in Group A, the women’s volleyball team were beaten 96-86 by Faroe Islands yesterday, although there was better fortune for the men’s side who recorded their first win of the Games a 77-60 triumph over Guernsey.Leading the way for Bermuda’s golfers is Ebonie Burgess who is ninth in the women’s event after shooting a second round 77. She is followed by Katrin Burnie (23rd), Laura Robinson (27th) and Elizabeth Parsons (27th).In the men’s competition Camiko Smith, who carded a second round 77, is 13th, Ryan Benevides is 15th, Damian Palanyandi 17th and Alexander Osbourne 27th.Both the men and women’s teams are placed fifth in their respective events.Medal hopeful Micah Franklin saw his hopes dashed after losing 3-2 to Ron Hickling of Jersey in the men’s singles squash play-offs. Chris Stout advanced, though, without even taking to the court after beating Christian Navas of Gibraltar by walkover. In the women’s singles Laura Robinson lost to Guernsey’s Natalie Dudd 3-2 in her play-off match.Bermuda finished seventh in the squash team event.In shooting, CAC Games bronze medallist Ross Roberts finished eighth in the 300m centre fire prone rifle.Roberts and Nelson Simons were fifth in the team event; Dwaynette Smith and Maurisa Smith finished fourth in 100 yards prone rifle team event; James McPhee and Brian Mello were tenth in the Olympic Skeet team event men and McPhee and Mello finished 15th in the sporting team competition.In the sporting individual men’s contest Mello finished 39th and McPhee 40th.Archer Paul Harshaw placed 38th in the single men’s recurve, and lost to Dylan Murphy of the Shetlands Island in the head to head men’s recurve.Harshaw is currently 35th in the men’s 720 recurve.Bermuda’s badminton side were bottom of their group in the team event after losing all three of their games, while Tre-Shun Correia, Neil de Ste Croix, Darren Glasford, Dominique Mayho finished tied 34th in men’s individual cycling road race.
