Great to see young guns come good
With the English football season less than a month away, it's great to see so many young Bermuda players plying their trade professionally in the spiritual home of football. The Island's top goalkeeper Freddy Hall has signed for Northampton Town, Nahki Wells could be on the verge of signing for Bradford City and Reggie Lambe is currently on trial at my old club Southend United. It's so important for the development of Bermuda's national team to have players in a professional environment, whether that's in the UK, the US or elsewhere. In years gone by we've had one or two players in the pro ranks, such as myself and Kyle Lightbourne, but if we can boost that to five or six it would really improve the overall performance of the team.Invariably after every two or three passes, the ball would have been touched by a professional player; that's what you need to become a consistent force at the international level. That's the dream scenario anyway, and hopefully a few more of our lads will be given a shot at the big-time over the next few years.I, for one, certainly believe we have the talent and I'll be utilising my contacts, both in the UK and the US, to make sure those players good enough get their chance. However, I'd warn any player hoping to make the grade that the hardest part isn't getting your foot in the door, it's keeping it there.I know more than anyone how cut-throat the professional game can be; one minute you're at Manchester United, the next you're at Rotherham! When you get the chance you have to make it count because you may never get another opportunity. It's all about making sure you're playing better than the guy who is competing for your jersey. As we've seen with Khano Smith and Reggie, football is full of setbacks. I understand Khano is taking his first steps on the coaching ladder, while Reggie is striving to stay in pro game.I'm confident it will work out for Reggie. By hook or by crook you have to stay employed as a pro footballer it's the only way you can improve your game and progress. Finally, I'm pleased to see Bermuda Hogges' performances have picked up as of late.I'm no longer involved with the franchise, but I attend their games to show my support as well as educate myself as a coach.I try to take in games at all levels whenever I can; that's the journey I'm on right now.I'd rather not expand on the reason why I stepped away from the Hogges. The decision has been made. As president, and co-owner, I wasn't happy with a few hings that we're going on and decided to walk away.Right now I'm focused on preparing North Village for their Premier Division title defence.
