Tech Netts start title defence with victory
Data Tech Netts made a winning start to their Women’s Winter League title defence at Bernard Park at the weekend.The defending champions hammered DC Warriors 57-15, with prolific goal shooter Gina Benjamin pouring in a game-high 36 points.Stacey O’Brien led the Warriors’ scoring with eight-points in a losing cause.Data Tech Netts stalwart Tamika White said: “We are very happy with the result. There were a lot of positive attitudes out there and it’s nice to start the season in a positive manner.”White is also delighted to see the league increased from eight to ten teams this season.“I’m very happy that we are playing against ten teams this year, which I think will make the league even more competitive,” she said.Also getting the season off on solid ground were last season’s Winter League runners up Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds who overpowered Young Men’s Social Club Blazing Bluebirds 67-32.As she has often done in the past goal shooter Daniell Raynor led Lady Bluebirds scoring with a game-high 48 points while Shanelle Lewis chipped in with ten points.Others prevailing at the weekend were New Life, Warwick Workman’s Club (WWC) Pink Panthers and Signworx Netts.New Life beat Smooth and Easy Tigers 56-31 in a high-scoring affair with Deborah DeShields pouring in 41 points while JahTuere Trott replied with 21 points in a losing cause for the fangless Smooth and Easy Tigers.Recording the day’s biggest win was WWC Pink Panthers who crushed North Village Community Club (NVCC) Lady Rams II 71-7. There were no further details provided on this match.Lady Rams’ first team also slumped to defeat, but fared much better than Lady Rams’ II in a 37-26 loss to Signworx Netts, who were led by Stevontae McCallan’s game-high 20 points.
