Shaky start for defending champs

North Village Lady Rams got their Women Active Tournament title defence off on the wrong foot at Bernard Park at the weekend.The champions suffered back-to-back losses at the hands of Signworx and Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds in preliminary Group One matches that could have gone either way to leave their title defence hanging by a thread.Lady Rams lost 14-12 to Signworx in their opening contest and then slumped to a 12-10 loss against Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds in another close battle that went right down to the wire.The champions are now facing elimination and must win their final group matches against Young Men’s Social Club Blazing Bluebirds and New Life if they are to stand any chance of progressing to the semi-finals.Remaining Group One matches saw unbeaten Lady Bluebirds get past Young Men’s Social Club Blazing Bluebirds 16-12 who then bounced back with a 12-11 win over New Life.In Group Two action, Smooth and Easy Tigers got their championship bid off to a promising start with back-to-back wins against DC Warriors and Warwick Pink Panthers.Smooth and Easy handed DC Warriors a 11-3 loss in their opening match and then built upon their early momentum with an equally convincing 14-3 rout over Pink Panthers.Remaining Group Two matches saw Pink Panthers roll over North Village Lady Rams Too 13-3 while Data Tech Netts comfortably beat Lady Rams Too 16-5.The eventual top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals once group matches are completed when the tournament resumes in the New YearSaturday also saw Bernard Park play host to Junior League netball.In Under-16 action IAS Shooters and Young Men’s Social Club Junior Bluebirds battled to a 23-23 tie. Keizhari Knight led Junior Bluebirds with 21 points while Taahira Butterfield (12) and Keshunae’ Robinson (11) combined for 23 points for IAS Shooters.The remaining Under-16 contest saw Signworx get past North Village Lady Rams 33-23. Danielle Onyia led all scorers with 27 points while Drewnai Bascome poured in 19 points in a losing cause for Lady Rams.In Under-14 play Donnaruri Robinson scored 14 points to guide Data Tech to a 19-15 win over North Village Lady Rams who were led by Jordyn Morris’ ten points.Nu-Art Superstarz defeated Young Men’s Social Club Young’uns 23-14 in the remaining Under-14 contest. Sondae Woods-Bell led all scorers with ten points while Satashie Rogers replied with nine points for Social Club Young’uns.Under-12 action saw Devonshire Cougars prevail over Colts Warriors 16-13 thanks to Kylah Hunt’s game-high 13 points. Delia Ebbin led Warriors with eight points.Other Under-12 match-ups saw Netts Whites hammer Netts Greens 31-5 and North Village Lady Rams get past Young Men’s Social Club Baby Bluebirds 12-6 with Drew Bascome and Brianna Swainson leading the charge with five points apiece.
