Perozzi linked with five potential opponents

Weighing her options: WBA world middleweight champion Teresa Perozziphoto by Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Board.

Local promoters are on the verge of “signing off” on an opponent to face WBA world middleweight champ Teresa Perozzi in the ring during March’s Teachers Rugby Football Club (TRFC) Fight Night.Among those being touted as potential contenders for Perozzi’s belt are the glamorous Lorissa Rivas, April Ward, Rachel Clarke, Kali Reis and Adelita Irazarry.“We are very close to signing a contender and announcing it,” said a TRFC spokesperson, who spoke under condition of anonymity. “It’s basically now a matter of agreeing to one and we have the WBA’s approval on a couple of them.”Perozzi, whose overall pro record stands at 8-4-1, landed the WBA world middleweight crown last month after prevailing against Rivas on a split decision at the Woodbrook Youth Academy in Trinidad and Tobago.Since then both camps have been engaged in behind-the-scenes discussions over the possibility of a rematch between the two female boxers that could potentially take place as early as March 10 at Berkeley School Gym.“We are in discussion with Rivas’ camp to see if a rematch is possible,” the TRFC spokesperson added. “But if not then some of these other options are available, ready and willing.”Under WBA rules southpaw Perozzi has to defend her belt every six months.“She has to fight between December 30 (2011) and June (2012) and so this is a good opportunity for her to do that,” the TRFC spokesperson said. “If Riva’s doesn’t fight then one of the other girls will fight for the belt instead.”It is understood that Perozzi and Rivas could earn as much as $10,000 apiece for the rematch.Rivas’ manager Boxu Potts remains confident that the rematch will materialise.“It’s not a possibility, she will definitely fight as long as the promoters can come up with the money,” he told The Royal Gazette.Victory in her next venture in the ring will earn mother-of-one Perozzi a shot at Tori Nelson’s WBC world middleweight belt in a unifying bout that could be held on local shores.“If she doesn’t lose (WBA title defence) the next one could for both belts against Tori Nelson,” the TRFC spokesperson said. “If we do something in the summer here we can have Tori come here.”Even though she has yet to learn the identity of her next opponent, Perozzi is adamant that she will be ready to rumble when March rolls around.“There are still things that have to be confirmed, including who I am fighting as well if it is for my belt,” she said. “But regardless of all the logistics I am happy and will be ready to go in March.”Perozzi is confident she can live up to the expectations associated with being champion.“There is a lot more pressure now that I am champion,” she added. “But I know the guys at Rego’s Gym will have me ready.”Incidentally, Perozzi’s amateur boxing career began at Teachers Fight Night.Tickets for March’s event, which has already garnered the overwhelming support of Government and the corporate sector, are expected to go on sale in the “very near future”.
