Olympic-bound Flora Duffy will be looking to build on her recent success in Mexico when she competes in today’s ITU World Triathlon San Diego in California.The professional triathlete is fresh off a stunning win at the Huatulco ITU Triathlon World Cup event where she conquered the Elite Women’s field in an overall time of two hours, 13 minutes and 17 seconds to savour a maiden win at this level.Logging considerable frequent flying miles criss-crossing the North American continent during the past week has taken its toll on Duffy. However, the past Female Athlete of the Year and 2008 Olympian says she’s up for the task in California.“I’m still a little tired from the race last weekend as it was only four days’ ago and there was quite a bit of travel between Mexico, to Boulder, to San Diego,” Duffy said. “But I’m feeling pretty good going into the race.”The Bermudian athlete will enter today’s event with high expectations of continuing her impressive form but is wary her task won’t be easy competing in a formidable field.“This is a really big race for many countries so there are a lot of girls racing here in tip-top form so I know it will be a hard race,” Duffy said. “My expectations are high as always but with this type of racing anything can happen.“I think if I finished in the top 20 I would be happy and a top 10 very happy. There are 72 girls racing so a top 20 is a good result.”The Olympic-distance course in San Diego comprises a 1,500 metre swim, 40K bike ride and 10K run.“I am not familiar with the course as this is the first time having a World Cup series race here,” Duffy said. “But I have seen parts of the course and it looks fine.”Duffy said qualifying for this summer’s Olympics in the UK thanks to her triumph in Mexico at the weekend has taken a heavy load off her shoulders.“Olympic qualification certainly eases some of the pressure,” she said. “It is crazy how much it weighs on your mind so now that I am secure I’m a lot more relaxed, though I still need to race well to maintain my position (39th).”Duffy has opted against competing at the final Olympic qualifier in Madrid, Spain later this month, not that it really matters having already booked her ticket to London.“I’m skipping Madrid because I have learned from past experience that flying over to Europe just before a race does not work for me,” she said. “I find the time change really difficult to get used to and have never raced well there.“I also don’t need to do that race so I would rather stay in Boulder (Colorado) and start my preparation for London.”Duffy’s compatriot and Olympic hopeful, Tyler Butterfield, was originally due to compete in San Diego but had a change of heart.He also put in a solid showing in Mexico, placing fourth in the Elite Men’s field in an overall time of two hours, three minutes and four seconds.
