Chapman shines at academy in England

Promising netballer Asante Chapman has successfully completed South East England Regional Academy trials in the UK

Promising netballer Asante Chapman successfully completed trials at the South East England Regional Academy at the weekend. The Bermudian was among the 23 players selected from her county, Surrey, to attend the regional academy, which combines the best netballers from Surrey, Essex, Middlesex and Kent.Congratulating Chapman on her latest achievement in the UK, Bermuda Netball Association (BNA) president Tracey Sharrieff said: “Asante’s accomplishments are paving the way of big dreams for our younger ladies. I am very proud of her.”The mid-court defender has been named in Bermuda’s 12-member senior netball squad that will compete at next month’s Americas Federation of Netball Association’s Championships in Trinidad and Tobago.Sharrieff is confident Chapman will be equal to the task in the Caribbean.“It is expected she will be the youngest player in Trinidad and I am sure all eyes will be on her,” she said. The aim of the South East England Regional Academy is to prepare athletes for the next level of netball (National Excell Programme) where they will be afforded the opportunity to compete for England in the Under-17 and Under-19 age groups. At the end of the season, players will undergo additional trials at the regional academy to determine whether they could play at the national level.Additionally, players are expected to participate in club netball next season at either senior or junior club level in the Surrey Under-16 League or the Under-16 Regional League. Thomas Knyvette College student Chapman will play for Epsom Down’s Netball Club’s senior squad as a result of her acceptance into the South East Academy. In October of last year, Chapman was accepted into the Elite Surrey Netball Academy after successfully completing trials on her 14th birthday.Earlier this year she was selected into the Surrey County Academy squad for 2012 /13. She was then invited to participate in two summer training sessions last month where the county academy coaches had the opportunity to further assess the players and then select the 10 girls for last weekend’s regional trials.Since relocating to the UK last year, Chapman has had to acclimatise to the playing conditions and formidable opponents.“The players over here are more tactical than in Bermuda,” she said. “Over here you plan exactly what you are going to do whereas in Bermuda you pretty much do whatever comes to mind while you are playing.”
