Netballers face baptism of fire
Bermuda’s senior netballers will face a baptism of fire at the Americas Federation of Netball Associations’s (AFNA) Championships in Trinidad and Tobago today. The Island’s 12-strong squad, led by captain Karen Jones-Simmons, will take on tournament favourites Barbados in their opening round robin-match at the Jean Pierre Complex.Bermuda Netball Association (BNA) president Tracey Sharrieff, who is accompanying the team in the Caribbean, says the Island’s netballers are up for the challenge against the highly ranked Bajans.“We are taking Barbados,” Sharrieff boldly declared. “They are not one of the favourites to us.“We are not fearing anybody and intend to go full steam ahead.”Bermuda’s netballers have trained twice since arriving in Trinidad earlier in the week. They were due to play a practice match yesterday against a local team. But the match was postponed after Bermuda’s opponents failed to show.Sharrieff said the players had acclimatised to their new surroundings in Trinidad.“The players have adjusted nicely and we have a little fan club down here from Bermuda,” she said. “We are doing our best settling in.”Bermuda’s netballers have also coped well with the warmer climate in the Caribbean Island.“The heat hasn’t been too bad,” Sharrieff added. “The games will be played in the evening so it shouldn’t be too bad for the players.“The venue is very nice and the netball courts they have here are easy on the knees, so hopefully we won’t encounter any injuries.”The AFNA Championships take place from July 14-21.Bermuda are among the nine teams competing at the regional championships that also include Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada, St Lucia, Guyana, USA and Canada.Along with Barbados, Jamaica and hosts Trinidad are the tournament favourites.Bermuda have a bye tomorrow before facing hosts Trinidad on Monday.Bermuda squad: Karen (Jones) Simmons (capt), Marissa Wainwright (v-capt), Karlandra Smith, Jamila Godwin, Danielle Raynor, Ebonie Burgess, Kimale Evans, Asante Chapman, Jadirra Harvey, Kajuna Lema, Chaquita Simmons, Arkeita Fubler, Anthony Mouchette (coach), Jene Charles (assistant coach).
