Netballers well beaten by Barbados

Bermuda’s senior netballers suffered one of their worst losses at the Americas Federation of Netball Association’s (AFNA) Championships in Trinidad at the weekend. The Islanders slumped to a bruising 102-13 defeat at the hands of tournament favourites Barbados at the Jean Pierre Complex. The Bajans are presently ranked among the top ten countries in the world and they demonstrated just why with an dominant display that dashed any hope Bermuda might have had of pulling off an upset against their highly fancied opponents.Bermuda struggled to cope with Barbados’ taller players who made passing extremely difficult on court.“They have a lot of elevation so every pass we made — no matter how high — they were intercepting the ball,” said Bermuda Netball Association president Tracey Sharrieff. “They were coming out of the air like nothing.“We should’ve tried something new after they intercepted three passes because those passes just weren’t working at all. But we fell into the trap of passing the ball the same way throughout the game and didn’t change up at all.“The speed and everything was good, our fitness levels were great and we were able to get shots off. But we just couldn’t get out to work from the centre.”Bermuda, who had a bye yesterday, take on hosts and tournament favourites Trinidad today.Sharrieff said Bermuda’s netballers have already done their homework on the host country.“We have studied Trinidad and their shooters are tall and literally stand in one spot to receive overhead passes and pump the ball as soon as they get it,” she added. “They literally just stand under the pole and don’t move.“What we are trying now is to get our players to elevate themselves a little higher to try and intercept their passes to the shooter.”Despite the heavy loss to Barbados, Sharrieff said morale remains high in the Bermuda camp.“The girls are still excited about playing the game and are ready to gain some more experience against Trinidad,” she added. “The girls are still enjoying themselves and learning from the experience.”
