Tyler takes third in California
Olympian Tyler Butterfield finished an impressive third in the 34th Superfrog Triathlon in San Diego on Saturday, an event won by banned Tour De France champion Lance Armstrong.Bermuda’s other Olympian triathlete, Flora Duffy, also enjoyed a third-place finish in another event in California.Butterfield completed the 1.2 mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run in three hours, 57 minutes and 53 seconds, almost four minutes behind second-placed Leon Griffin of Boulder, Colorado while Armstrong was eight minutes ahead of the 29-year-old Bermudian.Armstrong, who is accused of taking performance enhancing drugs and has been given a lifetime ban by USADA, was able to compete in the event because it was not sanctioned and not subject to USADA rules.He completed the race in three hours, 49 minutes and 45 seconds to take overall honours as elite competitors occupied the top five places.Butterfield was eighth out of the water in 25.24 while Griffin was fourth in the swim in 24.52 and Armstrong fifth in 25.15. Armstrong won the bike ride in 2:02.48, Griffin was second in 2:03.05 and Butterfield fourth in 2:06.08.Butterfield was then fifth in the run in 1:23.57 while Armstrong was second in 1:19.58 and Griffin sixth in 1:24.22.Duffy, who like Butterfield is based in Colorado, took third in the Olympic-distance Herbalife Triathlon in Los Angeles and had an impressive showing with a finishing a time of 1:59.50, just under two minutes behind winner Alicia Kaye of Florida in 1:57.57. Lauren Goss of South Carolina was second in 1:59.30.
