Rookie Waldron continues to shine

Kiwon Waldron has come on in leaps and bounds during his rookie season in harness racing

Rookie driver Kiwon Waldron, who is believed to be the youngest winner in local harness racing, continued to impress over the weekend.The 12-year-old TN Tatem student won a heat in the 1:10/4-1:12/4 time bar with Mercedes Spence and claimed a cash prize after emerging as the third fastest driver on average time in his time bar in the Cablevision Friday Night Series.Waldron, who already has several victories already under his belt, has come on leaps and bounds in his rookie season racing out of Random Stables.“The experience has been good so far,” he said. “I was a little nervous my very first race day but not anymore.“I am having fun, enjoying winning races and I always try to be safe.”Despite his tender years Waldron has managed to more than hold his own.“It hasn’t been too challenging yet,” he said. “I have taken my pony out of his time bar already and I’m enjoying it a lot.”Waldron has placed high expectations on himself during his first season.“I hope to gain experience and win and get a trophy or blanket at the end of the season,” he said.The youngster has been driving horses for several years but only took up harness racing at the beginning of the season.His father Vain, one of several multiple heat winners at Vesey Street at the weekend, is also a rookie driver this year.“I like when I beat him,” Kiwon said. “This is my dad’s first year racing too but he won’t be in my time bar now, he’s gone into a faster one.Vain moved up a time bar after sweeping both heats in the !:10/4-1:12/4 time bar with Night Nurse. He also pocketed the first place cash prize as the fastest driver in his division on average time.Other double heat winners included Keith Woodley (Spirit Bruna’s) in the 1:15/1 and slower time bar, Thomas Whited (Abbey’s Dream) in the 1:04/4 and faster time bar and CJ Whited (Black & Mild) in the 1:05-1:06 time bary.Also doing the double at the weekend were Kirista Rabain who won a heat in the 1:07/2-1:08/2 time bar with Crown’s Jewel and 1:05-1:06 time bar with Nite Dreamer.Darico Clark continued his fine form at the Vesey Street track, recording two wins with Colonel’s Finest in the 1:08/3-1:10/3 time bar while Andy Stoneham (What-A-Sensation) swept both heats in the 1:07/2-1:08/2 time bar.Like Vain Waldron, Stoneham also moved up a time bar.Others claiming the winner’s purse in their respective time bars in the series were Stoneham, Clarke, Woodley, Daric Seymour, Colin Mello, CJ Whited and Cleveland Maybury.Mello’s stud Big Red Machine clocked the fastest time of 1:03 en route to winning the first heat in the Free for All.Philip Correia (Cherokee’s Superman) won the remaining heat in the Free for All to deny Mello the clean sweep.
