Sims moves up in Q School event

Michael Sims fired a three-under-par 68 in the second round of the second stage of PGA Q School yesterday to strengthen his bid to get back on one of the USA’s major tours.The top 19 with ties will advance to the demanding five-round final stage later this month and the Bermudian now finds himself just one shot behind those who currently sit in 19th position.Improving on his opening round of even-par 71 at the Plantation Preserve Golf Course in Plantation, Florida on Tuesday, Sims is tied with eight others in 28th place at three-under after 36 holes.Yesterday’s round, which pushed him 10 places up the leaderboard, included four birdies one at the par-five first hole and another at the par-five finishing hole.Inbetween were birdies at the par-four 11th and at the par-three 15th.The only blemish on his card was a four at the par-three 12th.Leading the tournament is home state player Rob Oppenheim who has put together rounds of 63 and 67 to sit on minus 12 nine shots ahead of Sims.However, the Georgia-based Bermudian is only one stroke behind the 10 players who currently in 18th place on four-under 138.In the first Q School stage last month, Sims scraped through by a single shot.And he’ll be well aware that two sub-par rounds today and tomorrow will be required to advance.The final stage will be held from November 28 to December 3 at the Jack Nicklaus course at La Quinta in California when players get the chance to secure cards on the PGA Tour and the Web. Com Tour (formerly Nationwide Tour).Sims played on the latter before losing his card two years ago.This year he earned a top 10 place in the relatively minor E-Golf Tour played mostly in North and South Carolina.
