Campbell good as Gold
Optimist sailor Campbell Patton clinched victory in the Gold Fleet in the second part of the Amlin Autumn Series that concluded in breezy conditions in the Great Sound at the weekend.The son of veteran Etchells sailor and Bermuda Sailing Association president Tim Patton finished eight points clear of nearest rivals Matilda Nicholls and Chase Cooper who both finished with 16 points. Benn Smith, who has impressed at overseas regattas this year, finished third.Nicholls topped the Gold Fleet in the first part of the series held between September and October.Claiming top honours in the Silver Fleet in the second part of the series was Felix Cutler whose father Alex competed at this year’s Melges 32 World Championships. Cutler beat Adam Larson by four points with Rian Geraghty-McDonnell rounding off the podium finishers.Luke Madeiros topped the Silver Fleet in the first part of the series.Sunday’s races were watched by visiting dignitary Jose (Quino) Nigaglioni of the International Optimist Dinghy Association who said he was delighted to see Optimist sailing thriving in Bermuda.This year’s Amlin Autumn Series featured a record 44 sailors, including four from overseas.“It was great to see so many happy kids enjoying sailing,” commented Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) flag officer Leatrice Roman. “Congratulations to Principle Race Officer (PRO) Jay Hooper and all his volunteers for running 61 Optimist races this Autumn. We are proud to be doing so much to encourage these young sailors to enjoy this wonderful sport".During the prizegiving ceremony Roman presented PRO Hooper with a special appreciation award on behalf off all the competitors in this year’s series.Thomas Penruddocke received the Sportsmanship Award while Gold Fleet sailors Joe Arrowsmith and Tayte Stefaniuk and Silver Fleet duo Geragthy-McDonnell and Larson received the Most Improved Awards for the series.Bermuda’s sailors are currently preparing for the annual Orange Bowl Regatta in Miami.
