Allen and Hoey victorious in record-breaking Butterfield and Vallis 5K
Stephen Allen and Rose-Anna Hoey headed up a record field in the Butterfield and Vallis 5K, winning the men’s and women’s titles respectively.Only two weeks after both won Bermuda Triangle Challenge crowns during Bermuda Marathon Weekend, they continued their winning ways yesterday with formidable performances in a race that attracted 357 finishers.Allen led from the start and never looked back to check on his pursuers — he didn’t need to as he secured a winning margin of more than a minute on nearest rival Christopher Harris to cross the finish line in 15 minutes 54 seconds.Going into the race Allen’s goal was to break 16 minutes, so he was more than satisfied with his morning’s work and put his good form down to solid training that features regular mile-repeat speed sessions. If you want to run fast, “you’ve got to push it in training,” he advised.Looking ahead, the 32-year-old hopes to compete in the Island Games, being held this summer in Bermuda, and possibly the World Police and Fire Games in Ireland later this year.Second-placed Harris, who was also the leading senior man, powered home in 17.07 ahead of Jonathan Herring, who clocked 17.43.In the women’s race Hoey was an equally dominant winner as she set a new lifetime best of 18.07 for the 3.1-mile distance. Her victory was all the more impressive considering she had run six miles beforehand and went on to complete a further 10 miles afterwards as she maintained her strict training regime for this April’s Boston Marathon.Hoey, 31, put her improving form down to a combination of cycling last summer, competing in the winter cross-country series and building her weekly mileage to the 70+ region as she aims to break three hours in this year’s Boston race. She has also been training with top Island road runner Ashley Estwanik, who is also entered in this year’s Boston Marathon. In the first mile Hoey had Bermuda international runner Tamika Williams for company. Williams, who the weekend before competed in the North America, Central American and Caribbean Cross Country Championships in Jamaica, found she had good leg speed and kept with Hoey until the steep incline on Berkeley Road. After that Hoey pushed ahead and eventually won ahead of Jennifer Alen (19.00) and Deon Breary (19.38). Williams was fourth in the women’s race with a time of 20.08.“I felt comfortable,” said Hoey. “My best 5K before today was 18:39, so this was a personal best.” She now plans to run in next month’s Lindo’s to Lindo’s 10K and the RenRe 10-mile road race before the Boston Marathon.Yesterday’s combined race and walk featured more than 730 competitors, which included many school students who took part in shorter races before the main 5K.In the primary school students’ race the boys’ winner was Iziah Tucker in 9.58, and the girls’ winner was Jade Johnston (10.42). The middle school students’ race boys’ winner was Aaron Jacobs in 9.14, while first girl was Ashly Irby (9.38).The senior school students’ race was won by Nate Hartwig in 17.57, with Samantha Dill the first girl in 25.51.In the 5K walk Shinah Simons led the way 33.53 from Sinclair Smith (33.59) and Ray Medeiros (34.02).
