Roque sets fastest time at Vesey Street

Eddie Roque won two heats in the Free for All and recorded the fastest time for the second straight week during weekend harness racing at Vesey Street

Evergreen driver Eddie Roque posted the fastest time at Vesey Street for the second straight week during the previous round of harness racing.Competing in the opening heat of the Free for All with stud GV Crystal Ball, the 64-year-old driver ran a 1:04/1 to pip Joe Vieira (Cherokee Kibbitz) at the line.Roque started the race in the two hole but overtook Vieira on the home stretch to take the win.“I stayed behind him the first lap and didn’t make my move until the second lap coming home,” he said. “I didn’t try to go right out of the gate because you can burn your horse out. “I’ve seen guys go out of the gate and underestimate their competition and get themselves in trouble whereas the horse can’t finish.”Roque crossed the line one fifth of a second ahead of nearest rival Vieira who came up short despite starting the race on the rail. The veteran driver then claimed the double after winning the second heat in the Free for All also by one fifth of a second ahead of nearest rival David Burrows Jr (Mike’s Shadow) in another close contest.Burrows’ gelding had the rail while Roque found himself again positioned in the two hole.“I was the piggy in the middle in both heats,” Roque smiled.Naturally, Roque was delighted to post the fastest time for the second straight race day.“I liked it and I think my horse is strong, once he gets wound up he get’s faster and faster,” he said.Colin Mello and track record holder, Big Red Machine, won the two remaining heats in the Free for All.Roque, who has been involved in harness racing for decades, will now look to end the 2012-13 season with a bang during this weekend’s season ending Champion of Champions.“It would be nice to win,” he said. “But I never count my chickens before they hatch.”A total of six horses have entered in Saturday’s Champion of Champions elimination dash which will see the eventual four fastest on average time qualify for the final.
