Wells off the mark in season opener

Nahki Wells: Scored against Bristol City on Saturday.

Bradford City striker Nahki Wells erased any doubts over his ability to be a scoring threat in League One this season during the Bantams’ hard fought 2-2 away draw with Bristol City on Saturday. On the opening day of the season, the Bermuda international took only 33 minutes to open his account at Ashton Gate, slotting home James Hanson’s pass in the box to cancel out an 11th minute strike from Scott Wagstaff that gave the hosts the lead.Wells gave an ominous sign of things to come when his header from Mark Yeates’ set piece crashed against the woodwork in the fifth minute. The hosts regained the lead against the run of play in the 58th minute through a goal from forward Jay Emmanuel- Thomas. But the Bantams hit back 11 minutes from the end of regulation time when Rory McArdle’s glancing header found the back of the net to salvage a precious point on the road for the visitors.Wells, who netted 26 goals in all competitions for the Bantams last season, was delighted to open his account at the first attempt and prove that he can be a force to be reckoned with in League One this term.“I’m glad to get off the mark,” he told The Royal Gazette. “A lot of people questioned could I play in League One or not because I failed at my first attempt at Carlisle. But anyone who watched the game would’ve known that was definitely not true.“I put in a good shift against a good side with people that are earning a lot more than the average players in League One and felt I was one of the outstanding players in the match.”Wells said Saturday’s encouraging result against preseason promotion favourites City did his team’s confidence the world of good.“It was a big ask to go down to Bristol and to come away feeling we could’ve won is a great start,” he added. “The tempo was high and they had experienced players in every position that could handle the ball so we had to be very disciplined.“A lot of the boys grew in confidence as the game went on and there’s a lot of positives we can take from the match.”Bradford return to action tomorrow when they face Championship side Huddersfield in the Capital One Cup at John Smith’s Stadium.“If we can overcome Huddersfield, which I’m sure is possible, it would be a great achievement because they are a Championsip side with high ambitions and good players,” Wells said.“I’m not sure if the Capital One Cup is the highest thing on the manager’s list this season. But I’m sure he would want to win it regardless, that’s just the mentality at Bradford.”Last year saw Bradford reach the final of the Capital One Cup where they lost heavily to Premier side Swansea City at Wembley Stadium.“We rode our luck a lot last year,” said Wells, the first Bermudian to play and score at the new Wembley Stadium. The Bantams host Wells’ former team Carlisle at Valley Parade in their home league season opener next Saturday.
