Netballers look to impress at Youth Worlds

Bermuda manager Jene Charles is confident the Island’s inexperienced team can impress at this month’s World Youth Netball Championships to be held in Glasgow, Scotland.“No doubt they will represent Bermuda to a high standard,” she said in a press release. “Most players are new to international tournaments but all are extremely excited.“Coaches Benjamin (Gina Benjamin) and Mouchette (Anthony Mouchette), who are no strangers to international competition, have readied them for the experience.“The team had their last warm-up game on Wednesday night in preparation of the upcoming trip. Bermuda will be going into the WYN (World Youth Netball) Championships with a healthy and fit team.”Bermuda have been drawn in Pool B that also includes regional rivals Trinidad and Tobago, New Zealand, Northern Ireland and Malta. The Island’s netballers will face the Kiwis in their opening game of the championships on August 22 at the Commonwealth Arena. The tournament will be held from August 22 to August 31.Last month saw the local team gain valuable practise during Canada and the England All Saints’ whirlwind tour of the Island.Bermuda will be led on court in Scotland by captain Jaylynn Hines. The squad includes promising mid-court defender Asante Chapman who plays with ‘The Downs’ in the Surrey Junior Netball League in England.Chapman’s experience playing in the UK could be valuable to the team.Bermuda’s preparations were set back following the loss of key players Dominique Richardson and vice-captain Diara Benjamin, daughter of team coach Gina.Dynamic mid-court player Richardson has been ruled out through school commitments while Benjamin was forced out after breaking a leg in a road traffic accident. This year marks Bermuda’s first appearance at the championships in nearly a decade. The Bermuda squad are due to depart for the UK next Monday.Bermuda: Jaylynn Hines (captain), Michelle Onyia, Olivia Onyia, Jahkintae Williams, Miia white, Akeyla Furbert, Kayjuna Lema, Jasmyn Renfroe, Asante Chapman, Danielle Onyia, Jahtuere Trott.
