Phillips endures mixed bag in New York

Daniel Phillips endured mixed fortunes at the Little Mo International Tournament in New York today. The promising tennis player won the boys Under-eight doubles title playing with Californian Nishesh Basavareddy but lost to his doubles partner in the singles final at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills.Phillips lost in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) against Basavareddy who successfully defended his singles title. The Somerset Primary student trailed early in the first set but clawed his way back into contention after twice breaking his rival’s serve.Phillips had the advantage in the seventh game but was unable to capitalise as Basavareddy won the next two points to go up a set.Basavareddy turned his game up another notch in the second set to forge a commanding 4-0 lead before Phillips mounted a late fightback that ultimately came up short. The youngster broke Basavareddy in the fifth game and made life difficult on court for his rival for the remainder of the match.“They were battling deuce and I think they must’ve had four or five deuce points for the last two games each,” said Phillips’ coach, Sam Maybury. “It was really a phenomenal ending for the young boys.“Daniel played on a level he hasn’t seen and it was only his rival’s seasoned international experience that saw him through because it was deuce almost every game from the beginning.“I am so proud of Daniel who represented Bermuda well.”Phillips also finished runner-up to Basavarareddy at July’s Little Mo event in Colorado.Following his loss in the singles final, Phillips teamed up with Basavareddy to win the doubles title courtesy of a convincing 8-0 win over second seeds Rohan Patel and Andrew Salu in the final.Meanwhile, Phillips’ sister, Imani, was denied glory in the girls Under- 11 doubles final.Imani and partner Marietta Kintiroglou defaulted the match after the latter was left stranded without any transportation to get to the venue.Imani and Kintiroglou were due to face Fiona Arrese and Millie Elsborg in the final.Earlier during the tournament Imani, who received a sportsmanship award, reached the semi-final in the girls under-11 singles where she lost (6-1, 6-0) to number one seed Elsborg of Denmark.
