Netballers lose again
Bermuda suffered their second loss to Northern Ireland in 48 hours at the World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow, Scotland today. The Islanders slumped to a 53-22 defeat at the hands of the Irish who led from start to finish.Mental lapses and poor shooting inside the circle took its toll on Bermuda who have managed just one win at the tournament so far.Bermuda coach Gina Benjamin made no excuses for her team’s lethargic performance.“They were tired,” she said. “They made some bad mistakes out there, it was a winnable game.”The Irish got past Bermuda 62-32 when the two countries met at the Emirates Arena earlier this week.“We knew what to expect and we were hoping for the win,” said Northern Ireland captain Kirstie McCammon.Bermuda’s opponents built up a comfortable 14-6 lead by the end of the first quarter before both teams went cold inside the shooting circle. The Irish shooting slightly improved in the second-half while Bermuda’s struggles in attack continued at the opposite end of the court.Bermuda tried their best to close the gap in the final quarter but all to no avail as their opponents scored ten consecutive goals to put the match further beyond reach.Bermuda coach Benjamin will undoubtedly be looking for an improved showing from her players when they face Singapore tomorrow.“We’re going to get ready for it,” she said. “We’re going to make sure the girls have positive spirits and go out there and fight like it’s our very first game.”
