Eastern Counties champs taking no chances against challengers

Champions St David’s will enter tomorrow’s Eastern Counties final round clash with Flatts at Lords as the overwhelming favourites to defend their crown. However, one thing Islanders’ coaching staff have stressed all week to their players is to avoid taking anything for granted against a Flatts side boasting potential match winners such as Kevin Hurdle, Rahji Edness and the swashbuckling James Celestine.Evidently, the advice hasn’t fallen on deaf ears.“We had a meeting after the team got picked and it was brought to us that we cannot slacken off,” said veteran St David’s all-rounder Rudell Pitcher. “We have to apply the pressure and keep playing attacking cricket all the way through and knock Flatts off their high horse.”A draw would be enough for newly crowned Logic 50 Over champs St David’s to retain the coveted Eastern Counties trophy. But Pitcher and his fellow teammates would rather retain the trophy with an outright win.“We are not playing for no draw,” Pitcher declared. “We are trying to give the crowd what they come out for; exciting and aggressive cricket. If we field or bat first we are coming and playing to win,”St David’s dethroned Bailey’s Bay as champions in the previous round. The Islanders rolled their fierce rivals over for a paltry 89 runs and then replied with 92 for four in 34.3 overs.Pitcher, who made his debut against Bay as a 17-year old colt at Lords nearly two decades ago, played an integral role in St David’s emphatic six wicket win, returning impressive figures of 3-12 off five overs to earn MVP accolades. The former St George’s Cup Match player said being chosen as MVP in a counties match is a feat he’s long strived for.“I always aspired to be the MVP and my dream came true this year,” Pitcher said. “Hopefully I can do it again.”St David’s have made two changes to their squad for tomorrow’s clash from the one that humbled Bay in the previous round.Batsman Maclaren Lowe, a reserve against Bay, has come in along with left arm spinner Kameron Fox for guest players Chris Douglas and Oronde Bascome. The champions have plenty of lumber in the batting department and the most potent and balanced bowling attack in the Island.Cleveland County is the sole team to score more than 200 runs against the Islanders this term.Medium pacer Pitcher has played a leading role in his team’s bowling attack, claiming more than 20 wickets in all competitions so far.“My goal at the beginning of the season was to get 2-3 wickets per game and I’ve got a little more than that,” he said. “I’ve also worked a lot on my batting this year.”The champions will again be led in battle by skipper OJ Pitcher who marshalled his troops well in their demolition of Bay in the previous round.“OJ has done an exceptional job as captain in reference to field placing and changing the bowling at the right time,” Pitcher said. “It seemed like every time he changed the bowling (against Bay in the previous round) we got one or two wickets.”St David’s: OJ Pitcher (capt), Delyone Borden, Fiqre Crockwell, George O’Brien Jr, Loren Marshall, Justin Pitcher, Kameron Fox, Sammy Robinson, Rudell Pitcher, Del Hollis, Maclaren LoweFlatts: Kijuan Franks (capt), Paul Carr, Reggie Baker, Regino Smith, Nelson Bascome, James Celestine, Kevin Hurdle, Vernon Eve, Rahji Edness, Dajon Carey, Chris Daley

Champions St David's will be looking for big things from veteran medium pacer Rudell Pitcher during their Eastern Counties final round clash with Flatts at Lords tomorrow
