Sharpshooter DeShields leads Panthers charge
Warwick Workman’s Club Pink Panthers continued their superb early season form, outscoring a youthful Blazzin Bluebirds 53-34 to get the 2013-14 Senior Winter League campaign off to a winning start at Bernard Park on Saturday.
Evergreen goal-shooter Debbie DeShields scored more goals (42) than her team’s rivals could muster on court one to lead the Panthers to a comfortable victory.
Led by the laserlike shooting of DeShields, the visitors jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the first quarter and were able to keep their noses out front the rest of the way.
Safarina Woolridge and Kirstin Saltus shone in Panthers’ defence while the midcourt foursome Roydelle Robinson, Jadirra Harvey, Wenda Roberts and Darricka Simons also held their end of the bargain.
“Everybody played well,” said Panthers coach Debra Saltus, who celebrated her birthday on Saturday. “It was a team effort.”
Saltus changed her entire midcourt at the half which did little to disrupt the team’s chemistry.
“I went out there not taking them (Bluebirds) for granted,” she said.
“But once we had a comfortable lead at the half I decided to make some changes because we want to bring everyone more or less to the same level.”
As for DeShields’ phenomenal shooting, Saltus acknowledged: “Debbie really did a good job of shooting. Her shooting was remarkable.”
Newly-crowned Slyvia Eastley Tournament champions Panthers, whose ranks have been strengthened by the arrivals of several new faces, remain unbeaten in all competitions so far this term.
Frederick Samuels replied with 29 goals for Blazzin Bluebirds.
Also making winning starts to the new Senior Winter League campaign were last season’s runners-up Lady Bluebirds and Signworx Netts.
Lady Bluebirds prevailed 42-16 over league newcomers Bluebirds Too on court one.
Ebonie Burgess scored 30 goals and Eshe Grant ten to lead Lady Bluebirds to victory.
Tyanna Hayward replied with ten for Bluebirds Too.
Signworx Netts overpowered Robinhood Tigers 42-25 on court two.
Danielle Onyia (18) and Jasmyn Renfoe (17) combined for 35 goals for Netts while Jahtuere Trott scored 13 for Tigers.
