Under-19s and women off to Vegas
Bermuda will send two teams to compete at the Las Vegas Rugby Invitational this weekend.
The men’s under-19 and women’s side, ‘the Dark ‘n’ Stormies’, will both take on teams from around the world in the three-day competition.
More than 240 men’s, women’s and youth teams competed in last year’s tournament, including Bermuda women’s side who won the Shield event in only their second overseas competition.
The under-19 squad, made up of Calum Maule, Avery Williams, Rory Dublin, Rory Crofts, Nick DaCosta, James Patterson, Chakote Wainwright, Kamel Easton, Keyano Bean, Nick Pell, Ben Howland and Josh DeAllie will compete in the High School Open Division. The women’s squad includes Jillian Smith, Helen McHugh, Deneka Borden, Anthi Xipolia, Mika Tomita, Amanda Swan, Erica McArthur, Jess Gilbert, Karly Alleyne, Aleisha James and Joanna Hickley.
n League leaders Police claimed a 46-10 victory over Mariners in the Paul Marsden Memorial Trophy at the North Field at the weekend.
Police ran rampant over an under strength Mariners side to extend their lead at the top of the table. They scored eight tries with Police winger Cobus Vermaak crossing for line for three tries. Tommy Edwards and Paull Davis each bagged a brace. Darren Richardson finished off the landslide with a solo effort. Tommy Edwards kicked three conversions.
Mariners struggled to field a side and were bolstered by seven Bermuda under-19 players. They fought to the end and were rewarded by tries from Kamel Easten and Neville Zuill. Teachers held on for a valuable 15-5 victory over Renegades in their match at the weekend. The two teams played to a first half stalemate with a Tom Gregory penalty giving Teachers a 3-0 lead early in the second half.
Teachers were finding chinks in the Renegades defence and tries by Corey Boyce and Andre Landy saw them exploit the space.
Tom Gregory then converted a try to give Teachers a commanding 15-0 lead. Renegades’ never-say-die attitude and their burly pack drove deep into Teachers’ half with Paul Dobinson finally breaching their opponents’ defence.
However, Teachers held on to earn a 15-5 victory, which kept them in touch with Police.
In the women’s division, league leaders Police bounced back from a 2-0 early deficit to triumph 5-2 over a spirited Mariners side. Jo Hickley scored a hat-trick and Bermuda player Mika Tomita added a try. In the weekend’s other match, Teachers beat Renegades 3-0 with Kathie Wright scoring three tries.
