Little master Lugo steals the show

Anthony Leader, Corey Outerbridge and Talia Iris were crowed black belt grandchampions at the Sensei Roots Invitational Shiai on Sunday.

Competing at the Pembroke Sunday School, more than 40 competitors vied for class honours in age groups ranging from 6 years old right up to masters.

Leader won the men’s forms title, along with the advanced men’s 40 and over and black belt weapons forms honours.

Outerbridge captured the men’s weapons grandchampionship, while also putting his hands on the advanced men’s and black belt weapons titles.

Iris claimed the women’s forms title and black belt championship.

Shuntae Hendrickson won the women’s novice forms division, while Andrea McKay won both the women’s black belt 40-and-over title and the black belt women’s weapons crown.

In the junior division, Jahzion Lugo won the novice boys title and was also selected the tournament’s MVP as the only competitor to contest the three categories of competition offered: forms, weapons and sparring.

Lugo also laid claim to the boys novice 10-15 age group forms and weapons division titles as well as the boys 10-12 sparring division.

Xavier Lee claimed the boys novice 10 and under forms trophy.

In the boys intermediate 10 and under age group, Jaime Furtado took home bragging rights.

Javier Franks hoisted the intermediate boys forms title, to go with his boys intermediate 10-15 forms title.

Ryley Mason put her name on the intermediate girls form grandchampionship, while also beating out competition in the girls intermediate 10-15 forms age group and girls 11-12 sparring section.

Isabel Roe won the girls novice forms division and Dominique Brown won the intermediate girls 10 and under forms championship.

In the remaining sparring divisions, Dekada Gilbert took home the boys title in the 6-7 age group, Dean Lottimore won the 8-9 title.

Princess Battersbee took home first-place honours in the girls 7-9 age group.
