Three-pronged attack has Lady Bluebirds flying high
Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds’ quest for 2013-14 Senior Winter League honours gathered momentum during the most recent round of matches at Bernard Park, but first they had to survive a stiff challenge from the Pink Panthers of Warwick Workmen’s Club.
The unbeaten league leaders were forced to pull out all the stops before squeaking past a gutsy Pink Panthers squad 47-46 in an evenly fought contest that could have gone either way.
Zakiya Douglas, the Lady Bluebirds wing defence, cited teamwork, fitness and communication as being central to their success, while admitting that Pink Panthers were a tough nut to crack. “It was not an easy game, but we pulled through,” she said.
Danielle Raynor, Arkeita Fubler and Ebonie Burgess accounted for the Lady Bluebirds’ scoring. Darrika Simons, the goal attack, scored 26 goals for Pink Panthers while Debbie DeShields, the goal shooter, had 20.
Elsewhere, Blazzin Bluebirds cruised to a comfortable 43-27 win over Robin Hood Tigers. Frederica Samuels led Blazzin Bluebirds’ charge with 38 goals. In the day’s other match, Signworxs Netts thrashed Bluebirds Too 62-16.
Senior Winter League action continues on Saturday with Tigers hosting Lady Bluebirds, Bluebirds Too taking on Pink Panthers and Blazzin Bluebirds doing battle with Signworxs Netts.
