Kickboxers pay respects to Noel-Simmons

Kickboxers are usually known as tough guys who do not pull their punches.

But members of the Bermuda Sanshou Association, in conjunction with All 4 Fun, the party rental company, have shown their softer side by donating money to the family of Devrae Noel-Simmons who died in January at age 45.

The association donated $1,000 raised during this year’s Agricultural Exhibition to an education fund set up for the son of the late fitness trainer.

Simmons was one of the original members of the BSA and was instrumental in the forming of the organisation in 2005.

He served as the BSA’s first strength and conditioning coach and, up until his passing, trained a number of the association’s elite athletes.

“Devrae dedicated numerous hours to our team and trained a number of our athletes for no compensation for years,” Garon Wilkinson, the BSA president, said.

“One of his companies, International Fitness Pros, was the sponsor of our wear to our first world championships and completely outfitted a team of 14 for our trip to China.

“Devrae was always willing to give. He will be sadly missed by me and every one of BSA.”

Simmons was a keen athlete, playing football for Dandy Town as a goalkeeper and semi-professional American football with the Oregon Thunderbolts. He was also a bodybuilder and rugby player with Teachers. He is survived by wife, Sue, and son, Dante.
