Selah Tuzo, T’syi Showers, Sakari Famous, Madelyn Moore, Sean Tucker, Taahira Butterfield and Marcus Smith were last night announced as the winners of the Denton Hurdle awards at Warwick Academy School.

Tuzo and Showers, both promising track and field athletes, were named the primary school girls’ and boys’ winners while Famous, a high jumper, and swimmer Moore share the middle school girls awards after outstanding performances at the recent Carifta Games. Butterfield, a Carifta Games sprinter, and Smith, a gymnast, were the boys’ and girls’ senior schools winners.

Tuzo, of Northlands Primary, earned the distinction of becoming the youngest ever winner of the Bermuda Day youth race at the age of nine. She has also won the Front Street Mile, the National Cross Country Championships, Dash at Dark, Telford Mile and the Butterfield and Vallis 2K race.

This year she set the over 10 girls’ 400 metres record at the Bermuda School Sports Federation Track and Field Championships.

Tuzo is also an avid netball player and was crowned MVP at this year’s BSSF All-Star match while also winning MVP for the 2013 and 2014 seasons for Netts Netball Club.

Showers recently travelled with the Whitney Institute Middle School track team for an overseas meet and finished third in the 800 metres and second in the 1,500 metres. He captains West End’s football, cricket, track and hockey teams.

Famous, of Dellwood, and Moore, of Warwick Academy, shared the middle school award for 2014. Famous won back-to-back high jump silver medals at the Carifta Games in Martinique. She also broke the BSSF high jump record for two consecutive years. Famous has played for the Bermuda basketball youth team for the past two years and was named MVP for the BSSF netball champions.

Moore was outstanding at swimming’s Carifta Games, collecting three gold, three silver and a bronze medal in the last two Games.

In the process she broke the 50 metres freestyle record at this year’s Carifta Games in Aruba, and also won two golds and a silver medal at last year’s NatWest Island Games in Bermuda. Already she is the owner of four national records in swimming.

Moore is very athletic, having also represented her school in swimming, netball, basketball, cross country, track and field, badminton, softball and hockey. She was the MVP at the BSSF netball All-Star game.

Warwick Academy’s Sean Tucker was the middle boys’ award winner. At the age of 14 he has already represented Bermuda in multiple sports, including track and field in the CAC Age Group Championships in Curacao, basketball in the under global Cup in Florida, volleyball for the Under-17 side in the ECVA tournament in Antigua.

He recently went to South Africa with the Bermuda Under-14 academy team and to Bahamas with the Bermuda Under-12 rugby team. Tucker is certified in water safety, CPR and first aid.

In the senior girls’ category, Butterfield of CedarBridge Academy was the winner. She has represented Bermuda at the Carifta Games since 2011 and has also represented Bermuda at the CAC Junior Championship Games in El Salvador in 2012 and the IAAF World Youth Championships in Ukraine in 2013.

Butterfield has also represented Bermuda’s Under-18 netball team at the Jean Pierre Netball tournament.

Senior boys’ award winner Marcus Smith was a former winner in the middle school division in 2010. He is the deputy head boy and a prefect at Saltus. Smith made history when he represented Bermuda’s first ever men’s gymnastics team at last summer’s NatWest Island Games.

The Denton Hurdle awards, now in its 29th year, recognises the top student-athletes in primary, middle and senior school. Only students in the final year of primary, middle or senior school are eligible for this reward.

Hurdle was a keen sportsman himself who attended Warwick Academy, Bermuda College and Dalhousie University. After completing his physical education degree he went on to teach at Warwick Academy.

He excelled in football, cricket and volleyball, but his first love was rugby where he captained the Teachers team and played regularly for Bermuda.
