Johnny Barnes beaten into third

Johnny Barnes finished third yesterday

Johnny Barnes, the bay colt that is owned by Bermuda Thoroughbred Racing Ltd, was beaten by 5¼ lengths at the 4.05 at Goodwood in West Sussex in the South of England yesterday.

The ebfstallions.com Peter Willetts Conditions Stakes, a class two race, was held over seven furlongs, with Johnny Barnes, a 15-8 second favourite, placing third behind Make It Up, who went off at 11-4, and Good Contact, the 13-8 favourite.

Johnny Barnes, named after Bermuda’s morning well-wisher, was drawn in an outside stall and subsequently held up by William Buick, his jockey, giving the frontrunning Make It Up an advantage that he would not relinquish under David Probert.

Trained by John Gosden, one of most successful trainers of his generation, Johnny Barnes was unable to replicate the impressive performance seen in winning his maiden three weeks ago, as he appeared one-paced when Buick pressed the button and edged right under pressure after being carried left by Step To The Shears, the 10-1 outsider of four.

Make It Up, whose style was aided by being drawn in stall one, is trained by Andrew Balding, who picked up the winner’s prize of £15,562.

Johnny Barnes, who shed its maiden tag last month, winning the British Stallion Studs EBF/bet365 Maiden Stakes for two-year-olds in Yarmouth, Norfolk, is not the only Bermuda-themed horse owned by BTR.

The evocatively named Horseshoe Bay, a potential future Epsom Derby candidate, being trained by the Sir Michael Stoute, arguably the most successful trainer in British history, and has an entry to make his debut this month at Newmarket.
