Schultz claims narrow win
Andrew Schultz, the top seed from the United States, defeated Mike McCallum, of Bermuda, by one pin in the final of the Bermuda Open Tenpin Classic tournament at Warwick Lanes at the weekend.
Both players ended with a 214 game to force a ninth and tenth frame roll-off to break the tie.
Schultz, from Florida, bowled a ninth-frame strike, and then bowled three strikes in a row in the tenth to leave himself with a total of 60.
McCallum then bowled a strike in the ninth frame, with two more strikes in the tenth. His next ball ended with a nine-pin count to hand Schultz the win.
The top-12 qualifiers competed in match-play format for the Championship, bowling 11 games with one more in the position round.
Mike Taylor, of the US, has won the tournament four times but failed to defend his title this year, placing third.
Terri Thomas, of the US, was this year’s women’s champion. The Bermuda Open Tenpin Classic, now in its sixth year, replaced the Professional Bowlers Southern Region Tour, which was held at Warwick Lanes for 14 years.
