Town deny pitch switch plan
Willis Dill, the Western Stars president, has denied Dandy Town had planned to switch tomorrow’s home match to Goose Gosling Field.
The club recently played two home matches at that venue because of flooding at St John’s Field, but suspicion surrounded those decisions, which follows a controversial switch last season when the Hornets opted to move their title deciding home match against Devonshire Cougars to Goose Gosling Field and duly romped to a 7-1 win which landed them the title.
With Town still in the hunt for the league there was talk earlier this week that the club would move tomorrow’s game against Southampton Rangers to Goose Gosling in a attempt to seize an advantage on a better playing surface. However, Dill said that was not the case and pointed out that Goose Gosling Field is Town’s home field for night matches.
“We were due to play Devonshire Cougars at St John’s [on February 15], the referee decided the field was unplayable because of all the water that was on it and the match was rescheduled for BAA which is our night home field,” Dill said.
“For the game with Hamilton Parish [March 1] our field was waterlogged. We knew that week that there was a lot of water on the field and we notified the BFA in advance that we would like to have our game switched if it was still waterlogged on the Sunday. So, all the proper protocol was put in place prior to [the game], and I’m more than sure that the Bermuda Football Association notified Hamilton Parish that would be the case and the game was played at BAA.
“If we had left it, Hamilton Parish would have come to St John’s and found the pitch was waterlogged, the referee, probably, would have called the game off and it would have been switched to a night game at BAA which is our home night field. Either way, if our pitch is unplayable, that is where we will be playing our matches.”
The BFA have to approve any venue switch and yesterday the Association had not received a request from Dandy Town to move the crucial league encounter to Woodlands Road. Dill also stressed that a request will only be made if St John’s Field is flooded, something which happens because the field is on marshland, as is nearby Goose Gosling Field.
“We would not move the game there just to move it there. In fact, this is the first I’ve heard of the game [this weekend] possibly being moved to BAA.”
Controversy arose last year when Dandy Town made the decision to switch their final match with Cougars, with even some club members unhappy with the decision.
“I can’t speak to what happened last year,” Dill, who only became president a few weeks ago, said. “I believe in making sure the correct protocol is put in place.
“If the field is waterlogged this weekend and they can’t play on Sunday then it is going to be a night game at BAA. I’ll look at the weather forecast and if I think it is going to be bad then I’ll notify BAA and the Bermuda Football Association.”
